Bright Horizons North Finchley Day Nursery and Preschool

Garden play has real texture here: a Mud Kitchen made from repurposed pallets sits alongside a Bug Hotel, planting beds, construction and writing areas, and a large sandpit. Bright Horizons North Finchley Day Nursery and Preschool cares for children from three months to five years and has 96 places in total. The under-two group also has its own garden, while retaining access to the larger outdoor space.

In April 2024, Ofsted judged the nursery Outstanding overall and in every graded area, with safeguarding arrangements effective at that inspection. The report described children who settled readily with staff who knew them well, and teaching that drew out language, mathematics, independence and respectful relationships.

Rooms and Ages

The room story starts with the under-twos: light, spacious rooms have two separate sleeping rooms and a separate garden for the youngest children. That gives babies a quieter sleep arrangement and an outdoor area shaped around their stage, rather than simply sharing the main garden all day.

Children aged two to three move into rooms centred on discovery and growing independence. French, yoga, sport, art and music are listed for this age group, while children over two are also offered sport, art, music and French classes. These are practical, named experiences rather than a generic enrichment promise: a toddler can encounter new words, movement and creative materials alongside the ordinary nursery day.

Preschool builds skills and confidence for the next learning step. The emphasis stays on preparing a child for transition rather than implying an admissions advantage.

Learning and Named Experiences

The Early Years Foundation Stage is the statutory framework for children's learning, development and care from birth to five. In daily terms, it means learning is built through play, conversation, routines and planned activities, rather than school-style lessons. Bright Horizons adds its group-wide Bright Beginnings Curriculum, organising activities around five areas of learning and practical life skills. It should be read as a group programme, not as a separate local curriculum claim.

In April 2024, children were encouraged to solve simple number problems and to halve quantities; dough-making prompted words such as solid, soggy and tough, then questions about what might happen when ingredients changed. Older babies were learning colours, while music groups used high and low pitch. That is a busy but coherent picture of language and mathematical thinking being woven into play.

Outdoors, the Mud Kitchen and Bug Hotel make the garden more than an open run-around space. Planting, construction, writing and sand areas give children different ways to handle materials, make marks and build, while the under-two garden protects a smaller-scale option for the youngest children.

Relationships carried weight in the April 2024 inspection. Staff sought babies' permission before personal care, supported children looking at their reflections, and gave older children genuine responsibility through peer councillor votes and choices of activity. Independence was built into meals and routines too: children served portions, scraped plates, managed belongings, followed hygiene routines and recognised their names.

Support for communication and additional needs was also detailed at that time. Staff used singing, signing and objects where helpful, and the SENCO made timely referrals to outside professionals when appropriate. A Ready to Read scheme gave children books to borrow at home. Bright Horizons' group-wide settling-in model offers non-chargeable sessions from up to six weeks before a start date, which may be useful for families planning a gradual introduction.

That positive 2024 account is not the full safeguarding picture. Ofsted's June 2026 branch compliance action followed a March safeguarding notification and recorded unmet requirements, with corrective action concerning safeguarding policies, children's safety and welfare, whistleblowing, respectful handling, behaviour and physical intervention. A separate Welfare Requirements Notice published on 22 June 2026 concerned organisational safeguarding leadership and oversight after a serious incident and weaknesses across some Bright Horizons settings. It did not say those breaches were found at every setting, but it is relevant to this branch because it applies to the registered person.

The nursery is at Moss Hall Hotel, 10-11 Moss Hall Crescent, North Finchley, London N12 8NY. West Finchley and Woodside Park Tube stations are the named nearby transport links. It is open through the year apart from one inset day, bank and public holidays, and the period between Christmas and New Year.

Attendance is sold by days per week, with rates for additional sessions available on request. The 2026 fee sheet also describes eligible funded childcare as 10-hour sessions beginning at opening time, with funded hours stretched across 50 weeks. Current nursery-specific prices are supplied in the provider's written quotation.

For privately paid care, the all-inclusive arrangement covers meals prepared by an onsite chef, snacks, nappies, formula, wipes and creams. Funded childcare covers eligible care hours only: Bright Horizons supplies associated consumables, while the food charge is non-mandatory and cannot be made a condition of accessing a funded place. The group-wide food programme describes three balanced meals and two snacks each day.

• Safeguarding and oversight. June 2026 branch action covered safeguarding policies, safety and welfare, whistleblowing, respectful handling, behaviour and physical intervention; the separate group-level notice concerned organisational leadership and oversight. Ask how those actions are reflected in the local team's current practice and how concerns are escalated.

• Booking and funded care. Care is arranged by days per week, while additional sessions are quoted separately and funded care is delivered in 10-hour sessions across 50 weeks. Discuss how the intended pattern works with funding and with the non-mandatory food charge.

• Food and dietary needs. Private care includes food and consumables, while the funded-hours arrangement handles food separately. Families managing an allergy or dietary requirement should confirm the current kitchen and food arrangements directly.

This is a substantial North Finchley nursery with a well-developed outdoor offer, notably the Mud Kitchen, Bug Hotel and the under-two garden, plus a clear sequence from baby provision through preschool. The April 2024 Outstanding inspection described thoughtful teaching, strong independence work and purposeful support for communication and SEND.

The later June 2026 safeguarding actions change how that strength should be read. They are material matters to discuss, rather than evidence that a parent can treat the 2024 inspection as a complete current safety account. The setting is best suited to families who want regular care arranged by days each week, those who may need additional sessions by agreement, and eligible families comfortable with funded hours stretched across the year.
