In October 2023, learning had a confident practical streak. A guessing game around sea life turned vocabulary into a peer challenge, with children attending closely to one another. Elsewhere, a spider-web hunt and singing developed language, while children used counting and size ideas as they built a dinosaur castle from wooden blocks. These examples show the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) translated into play: language, mathematics and physical development were built through activities rather than taught as isolated lessons. The progression was deliberate, moving children from supported exploration towards independent choices and self-care. That makes the statutory framework tangible: children practised its learning areas through purposeful experiences suited to their development.

Outdoor provision was another strength at that visit. Outdoor choice carried both movement and responsibility: play continued across changing weather, and caring for the nursery's guinea pigs gave children a practical task. Staff followed children's ideas and added mathematical language while they built sandcastles. Ofsted nevertheless asked leaders to organise group times so every child remained engaged and had a chance to contribute.

Relationships were reassuringly specific in October 2023. Key-person relationships gave the youngest children reassurance. Further up the age range, children managed parts of mealtime for themselves, washed their hands before eating and brushed their teeth after lunch. The progression from close comfort to practical independence gives parents a clear sense of how care changed with age.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective at the inspection. Inspectors found that leaders maintained appropriate, consistent child-protection practice across the team and kept the premises secure. The SENCo worked with parents and other professionals, and children with SEND made good progress from their starting points. The remaining qualification matters: Ofsted asked leaders to review staff deployment and embed strategies so children with SEND could participate fully during shared learning.
