Play And Learn Day Nursery Review

At a Glance

Play And Learn Day Nursery is a 64-place childcare provider on non-domestic premises at 7 & 9 East Barnet Road, Barnet, EN4 8RR. Ofsted judged it Good in October 2023, with effective safeguarding arrangements.

The Nursery Experience

In October 2023, children approached play enthusiastically, chose from varied resources and understood the daily routine. Staff planned from children's interests and next steps. Stories, nursery rhymes, responsive listening and modelled vocabulary supported communication and language, while play tunnels, pulling to stand and bikes developed physical confidence.

Older children asked questions during stories, rode bikes, used play dough and explored an outdoor sand tray. Younger children crawled through tunnels and practised standing. Ofsted nevertheless asked the nursery to give babies more sensory exploration and fuller participation in creative activity. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum therefore had clear breadth, but provision for the youngest children needed sharpening.

Care and Support

Children were safe, secure and closely supervised at the inspection. Staff checked equipment, assessed risks, practised fire evacuations and held current paediatric first-aid certificates. They also taught personal safety through everyday routines. Respectful modelling promoted friendship, kindness and positive behaviour.

Parents reported regular updates about well-being, achievements, activities and next steps. Support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities was informed by knowledgeable leadership. A further priority was children learning English as an additional language: staff collected home-language information, but did not consistently use families' key words in activities.

Practical Information

The setting has 64 places in total. Families should seek one clear current answer covering opening hours, session choices, minimum attendance, age range, funded-entitlement delivery and settling-in arrangements.

The 2023 inspection found that nutritious food was provided and children learned healthy choices and handwashing routines. A current provider-specific quotation and written charge schedule will be needed for budgeting.

Things to Consider

Key-person consistency. Ofsted asked leaders to strengthen this role so it consistently promotes children's progress. The current key-person arrangements are an important point for a visit.

Provision for younger children. Inspectors wanted more sensory resources and creative participation for babies. Families with younger children can focus their enquiry on what has changed.

Attendance and charges. Published session patterns, funded-hour arrangements and charge categories are unavailable. These points need written confirmation before accepting a place.

The Verdict

The strongest evidence is a Good inspection built on secure children, purposeful language work, physical play and effective safeguarding. The improvement points are specific: key-person consistency, home-language use and sensory provision for babies. This setting may suit families who value routine, communication and active play. Families seeking either a fixed full-day pattern or shorter session-based attendance need to establish that their preferred model is actually offered.
