Warm relationships, purposeful talk and unusually concrete healthy-eating experiences define Stay & Play Nursery. Judged Good by Ofsted in November 2024, it showed effective safeguarding and good outcomes across education, behaviour, personal development and leadership. The setting has capacity for 48 children at 33b Station Road, New Barnet.
The strongest feature is how staff turn ordinary play into conversation. Children who are less confident speakers are drawn into home-corner play through careful questions, while toddlers caring for dolls connect stories with speaking and listening. This is a nursery where language development runs through the day rather than sitting in a separate activity.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) supplies the educational framework. In parent terms, that means practitioners use play and adult-led experiences to build communication, physical, personal and wider learning, then use children's starting points to decide what should come next. In November 2024, that sequence generally worked well and children showed strong interest in stories and new words.
Daily experiences were practical and age-aware at that inspection. Babies filled containers outdoors, toddlers balanced on beams, and preschool children used safety knives to prepare fruit and vegetables while discussing colour, taste and healthy choices. Older children also exercised at weekly disco parties. These are simple, memorable activities that combine physical confidence, vocabulary and independence.
Cultural learning had equal substance. Clothing, international foods, festivals, art and craft gave children ways to share their own backgrounds and encounter those of others. The result was not a token celebration calendar, but repeated opportunities to practise curiosity and respect.
Relationships were a clear strength in November 2024. Children separated confidently, chose activities in an organised environment and behaved well. Puppets and books helped them understand emotions, sharing, choices and the effect of their behaviour on other people. Toddlers' gentle care of dolls showed how that learning carried into play.
Parents told the inspector that communication and support were strong. Staff shared ideas for continuing learning at home and gave advice on practical stages including toilet training and eating. Team and individual meetings supported practitioners' professional development. The inspection found an open, positive safeguarding culture and effective arrangements.

Stay & Play Nursery's case rests on warm interactions used with purpose. The 2024 inspection describes practitioners drawing quieter children into conversation, teaching emotions through stories and puppets, and giving babies, toddlers and preschool children practical physical experiences. Healthy choices and cultural respect are learned by doing. The nursery is best suited to families who value language-rich play, growing independence and clear parent communication, once its attendance pattern has been matched to their week.
