Choice is central to the day at The Kindergarten Day Nursery & Pre School. At its September 2023 inspection, children used a choosing box to select songs, told staff what they wanted to do next and confidently led parts of their play. Ofsted rated the nursery Good, with Good judgements across education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management.

The setting is at 10-12 Heriot Road, London NW4 2DG, and cares for children aged two to five. It has capacity for 50 children. The strongest thread in the inspection is responsive interaction: staff extended vocabulary, explained unfamiliar words and used books, words and phrases in different languages.

In September 2023, staff were seen adapting a varied programme to what each child could already do and what they were ready to learn next. In practical terms, the Early Years Foundation Stage was delivered through communication, physical development, independence and learning through play rather than isolated exercises. Children chose songs, initiated firefighter role play and showed excitement when a fire engine later parked outside.

Outdoor activity had real purpose, combining energetic movement with turn-taking and spatial awareness. Children jumped, balanced, moved in different directions and negotiated obstacles on scooters, while local walks developed stamina and coordination. Group activities were less consistently successful: Ofsted asked leaders to organise them so that every child remained immersed in learning.

Children's own ideas had room to grow. The firefighter play did not remain an adult-planned topic: children initiated it, then connected their play with the sight of a fire engine outside. The choosing box gave even a simple song choice a concrete communication purpose. These small observations matter because they show curiosity, language and agency working together rather than sitting in separate activities.

Relationships were a clear strength in September 2023. Staff helped children settle quickly, built trust and created a warm atmosphere in which children felt safe. Parents told the inspector that staff were caring and welcoming, that their children were happy to attend and that they had made good progress.

Everyday independence included handwashing before meals, wiping noses and putting on aprons before water play. Those routines turn care tasks into skills children can practise for themselves. Staff were also good role models for behaviour, so the expectations around cooperation were demonstrated rather than merely stated. Staff encouraged cooperative play and helped children understand different cultural and linguistic backgrounds; parents also visited to share festivals. Safeguarding arrangements were effective at the inspection, with trained staff understanding welfare concerns, reporting responsibilities and risk assessment.

Leadership was also evaluated positively. Leaders reviewed practice, supervised staff regularly and supported training, while the curriculum took account of individual starting points and next steps. Children who spoke English as an additional language were among those found to be making good progress.

Ofsted's other improvement point concerned praise. Staff were asked to connect praise more precisely to children's achievements, so children could understand which actions had earned it.

A published full day runs from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. The setting operates all year apart from bank holidays and Christmas. Families need a current written quotation for provider-specific prices.

• Group-time engagement. Ofsted asked the nursery to reorganise group activities so that all children remained involved. Families may want to see how group times now hold the attention of children with different needs and interests.
• Purposeful praise. The inspection also asked staff to link praise clearly to what a child had achieved. This is worth exploring because specific feedback helps children understand and repeat successful choices.
• Attendance pattern. A full day spans ten hours, so families should consider whether that pattern matches the time their child is comfortable spending in one setting.

This is a convincing option for families who value child-led choices, strong language interaction and purposeful physical play. The September 2023 Good judgement is backed by concrete observations of children settling happily, communicating confidently and developing independence. The two improvement points are specific rather than vague, and both deserve discussion on a visit. It suits families seeking a full day across the working week, while those needing a shorter pattern should settle that practical point before deciding.
