In April 2023, learning moved readily between imaginative, physical and language-rich play. Children cared for dolls, cooked and used a pretend washing machine in a well-resourced home corner. Younger children made pretend pancakes with play dough while practitioners introduced words such as pat, roll, flatten and circle.

The nursery's curriculum follows the Early Years Foundation Stage. In practice, that means staff plan across communication, physical, personal and early academic development, then use children's interests and next steps to move learning forward. Outdoors, stepping stones, crates and tyres prompted children to judge space and consider one another's safety; scooters developed coordination and balance.

This was learning with a clear sequence rather than a collection of disconnected activities. Practitioners knew what each child needed to learn next, then drew on emerging interests to extend knowledge and skills. The pancake activity is a good example: familiar pretend play became a lesson in action words, shape and ingredients. For parents, that combination matters because it preserves the pleasure of child-led play while giving practitioners a defined educational purpose.

Physical development was woven into the day too. Balancing and jumping asked children to control their bodies, judge where others were moving and understand spatial language including nearer, further, close and far. Careful scooter riding added coordination and steering. These were not simply breaks from learning; movement carried language, safety awareness and growing independence at the same time.

Relationships were a strength in April 2023. Children formed good bonds with staff, and calm, consistent guidance supported kindness, behaviour and self-esteem. Practitioners shared children's next learning steps with parents and offered ideas for continuing learning at home.

Children could choose resources independently and helped tidy after play. That agency gives a useful picture of the nursery's expectations: children were trusted to make choices and take some responsibility for their surroundings. Staff acted as positive role models, and children were kind and caring towards their friends.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective at that inspection. Staff understood how to recognise and respond to concerns, while managers arranged training, suitability checks and premises risk assessments. Support for children learning English was less consistent: colleagues sometimes used shared languages and individual words, but home-language vocabulary gathered from families was not used reliably across the team.

Healthy routines included nutritious refreshments, daily fresh air, dance, exercise and physical activity. Parents also reported that communication was effective and that children became more confident and independent. Those links between nursery and home help adults reinforce the same next steps rather than treating learning in each place as separate.
