Villas Nursery

The strongest picture from that visit is of children who settled securely, chose resources independently and persisted with challenges. This is a compact setting with a warm inspection record rather than a nursery documented through glossy room or programme descriptions.

In July 2023, children built designs with construction toys, joined in with familiar stories and developed early mathematics through counting, shape and size language, songs and rhymes. The nursery works within the Early Years Foundation Stage. In parent language, this means that play and adult-guided activity develop communication, physical confidence, relationships and the foundations of literacy and mathematics, rather than expecting very young children to learn through formal lessons.

The garden widened that experience. Children ran, rode wheeled toys, shared bats and balls, and balanced on equipment; younger children practised crossing wooden planks and crates safely. This combination gave energetic children several ways to develop coordination, while sharing equipment made physical play social as well as active.

Cultural festivals, family contributions and inclusive resources also helped children encounter the backgrounds represented in the group. Staff supported communication with clear speech and language modelling, then brought stories to life through expressive reading. Children listened closely and confidently completed familiar sentences. Mathematics was similarly woven into ordinary activity rather than isolated as a lesson, making early concepts tangible for young children.

Relationships were a clear strength at the 2023 inspection. Staff knew children's development and interests, modelled considerate behaviour and responded warmly to emotional needs. Key persons used individual strategies for children with identified delays or special educational needs and/or disabilities, while work with other professionals added specialist input where needed.

Behaviour was another positive thread. Children used good manners, shared and took turns, while adults acted as calm role models. The result was not simply orderly play: children could pursue their own ideas, manage small social negotiations and take pride in what they made.

Families were offered settling-in sessions and regular progress updates. Staff also shared ways to extend learning at home. That continuity gives a key person useful context about a child's interests while giving parents practical ideas they can repeat beyond nursery.

Safeguarding was effective at the inspection: staff understood child-protection procedures, maintained supervision and ongoing risk assessment, and were supported by recruitment, induction and supervision arrangements. Children also developed awareness of their own safety. In the garden, for example, younger children were encouraged to cross balancing materials carefully rather than being kept away from manageable challenge.

Villas Nursery's appeal is its intimate scale and a Good 2023 inspection built on secure relationships, independent play, expressive stories and active garden experiences. It suits families who value a small group and want close communication with key persons. The term-time schedule may suit families working around school holidays, but the actual session choices and attendance patterns need to be established before a family can compare them with alternatives.
