Calm, purposeful play defined Bright Start Montessori Pre School at its March 2022 inspection. Ofsted judged the setting Good overall, with children's behaviour and attitudes Outstanding. Children were happy and secure, chose activities independently and sustained their concentration. Its curriculum meant learning through stories, conversation, imaginative play, physical activity and early mathematics rather than disconnected lessons.
This is a sessional pre-school at Crofton Oak Scout and Guide Hall on Crofton Road, Orpington, with 42 places in total. Its clearest strengths were language, imagination and respectful behaviour. The inspection is now more than four years old, so the detail below describes practice seen in March 2022 rather than a current-day promise.
In March 2022, staff delivered a thoughtfully planned and ambitious curriculum through activities children could select for themselves. Stories, conversation and new vocabulary sat alongside counting, comparing quantities and recognising shapes during play.
The strongest examples were specific. Children turned a pretend flying-carpet journey into a shared story, choosing destinations and telling friends how to move through an unfamiliar land. After a familiar story, they mixed colours to make their own mucky ducks. In the garden, small groups concentrated on throwing balls through a basketball hoop, while nature-school sessions combined outdoor activity with simple safety rules.
In March 2022, children separated confidently from parents and greeted staff and one another warmly. Strong parent partnerships and work with other professionals helped maintain continuity in learning and care. Staff identified gaps promptly, planned for individual needs and used picture-exchange cards to help children understand, including children receiving extra funding and children with SEND.
Safeguarding was effective at that inspection. Staff understood signs of concern and the procedures to follow, kept their knowledge current through training, supervised children vigilantly and used recruitment and ongoing suitability checks. One improvement remained: children who spoke English as an additional language needed more opportunities to hear and use their home language during play.

Bright Start's 2022 inspection found a calm pre-school where imaginative play, books, mathematical thinking and outdoor experiences worked together rather than as isolated activities. Outstanding behaviour was the headline strength, supported by warm relationships and confident routines. The setting is best suited to families seeking sessional pre-school provision and who value language-rich play, nature-school experiences and a measured atmosphere. The age of the inspection makes a current visit important, especially for families weighing support for home languages.
