Purposeful play and strong relationships defined Royston Playgroup at its March 2022 inspection. Ofsted judged the sessional setting Good, with effective safeguarding and Good judgements across education, behaviour, personal development and leadership. Its High Street base, at Harris Primary Academy Kent House in London SE20 7QR, has capacity for 24 children.
This is an inspection-led picture rather than a description of the current daily offer. In March 2022, children settled quickly, shared and took turns well, and made good progress through activities shaped around what they already knew and needed to learn next.
The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the areas of learning and development that early-years providers cover. In practice, that means play, stories, language, physical development and early number work are used to build skills towards school rather than taught as separate school lessons.
In March 2022, books had real weight in the day. Children listened closely, repeated phrases and helped narrate stories using props. The wider programme included singing, sand and water exploration, painting and colour mixing. Older children drew, cut out pictures, wrote their names and added numbers from the date. Outdoors, children used climbing equipment and wheeled toys, while shared foam-brick towers and long train tracks required cooperation as well as physical control.
Relationships were a clear strength in March 2022. Children greeted friends, moved into play quickly and often resolved competition for toys independently. Long-standing staff worked collaboratively, giving children and families continuity, while parents valued communication and practical help with toileting, behaviour, assessments and school applications.
Support for additional needs was a standout. Staff understood individual learning needs, behaviour patterns and preferred communication, while the manager tracked progress, worked with parents and other agencies, recorded the impact of additional funding and arranged one-to-one support. Safeguarding was effective at the inspection: staff understood reporting procedures, ongoing suitability checks and attendance monitoring.
There were two practical improvements to make. Healthy eating and oral-health work needed strengthening, and children needed a cosy place to rest or withdraw briefly when regulating their emotions.
