Forest School here means using woodland experiences to develop communication, physical confidence, independence, mathematics and understanding of the natural world.
Forest-school practice is the substance here, not a label. At its September 2024 inspection, Woodentots Forest School was judged Outstanding overall, with the same judgement for education, behaviour, personal development and leadership. The report describes children learning through the natural world, practical tasks and carefully managed physical challenge.
This is a small, sessional setting at Belsize Wood Nature Reserve, Woodland Walk, London NW3 2BZ, with capacity for 20 children. Its strongest case is unusually concrete: children used tools, identified bird calls, counted natural objects and built confidence on woodland slopes during the inspection.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the statutory framework behind the provision. In parent terms, that means play and adult-guided experiences build communication, physical development and personal development alongside early literacy, mathematics and understanding of the world. Woodentots' forest-school approach gave those areas a practical outdoor form in September 2024.
Natural materials became prompts for art, sound and number work. Tool use was paired with protective equipment and clear expectations, while bird identification and practical counting made communication and mathematics part of the woodland day. This was purposeful learning rather than loosely supervised outdoor play.
Physical challenge had a clear place too. Children climbed slopes, balanced on branches and used balls and hoops, developing coordination and core strength. They also put on their own forest-school kit and prepared fruit snacks, linking the day's practical routines to independence.
In September 2024, inspectors noted that children received individual support while becoming comfortable in the woodland setting. Staff also shared regular progress updates with parents and invited families to contribute to learning experiences.
Woodland risk was managed through daily site checks, clear activity boundaries, close supervision and simple safety rules for children. Ofsted found safeguarding effective.
The setting operates from Belsize Wood Nature Reserve on Woodland Walk in London. It is recorded as sessional day care and has capacity for 20 children. A current written quotation and confirmed attendance pattern are essential before deciding whether the timetable fits a family week.
Woodentots Forest School suits families seeking a small, sessional setting where woodland activity carries the curriculum. The 2024 inspection evidence connects natural-world learning with communication, mathematics, independence and supervised physical challenge. It is best suited to parents whose needs match its confirmed sessional attendance pattern.
Ofsted judged the setting Outstanding overall in September 2024. At that September 2024 Ofsted inspection, education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, and leadership and management were also judged Outstanding; safeguarding was effective.
Age eligibility should be confirmed for the session a family needs; the setting has capacity for 20 children in total.
Forest-school experiences carry early learning into practical tasks. During the September 2024 inspection, natural materials supported creative, communication and mathematical learning, alongside supervised climbing and balancing.
