The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the educational programmes, learning goals and assessment points. For a child, that means learning through play and adult-guided experiences rather than formal lessons. In May 2023, staff read with expression, repeated rhymes and used questions to build vocabulary and check understanding. Children also explored emotions through a book and songs about sharing and caring, connecting the ideas to their own lives.

Outdoor play had a purposeful physical strand. Children balanced on combinations of apparatus and sloping planks, while threading and connecting small parts developed finer control. A caterpillar found on a leaf prompted sustained interest and a link back to The Very Hungry Caterpillar. These examples show staff using books, movement and children's discoveries as starting points for learning. They also connect large physical movement with the smaller hand control children need for later practical and writing tasks.

The inspection also identified an important limitation. Staff did not always extend children's thinking and communication during play, including role play and a discussion about dinosaurs outdoors. The recommendation was to create more opportunities for children to develop their thinking.

Relationships were a clear strength in May 2023. Children were happy, formed positive bonds with staff and joined planned activities eagerly. They developed independence by tidying after play and learning to put on their jackets. Staff observed children closely, monitored progress and planned their next steps with the manager.

Children with special educational needs and/or disabilities benefited from links with specialist professionals and strategies from speech and language therapists. Children learning English as an additional language received strong settling support and could share thoughts in their home language. Parents received verbal updates and app-based communication. This combination gives families both a quick account at handover and a continuing digital record of nursery life.

Role play also held children's attention as they cared for dolls and considered hygiene. Staff began the day by asking children what they wanted to do, giving their interests a place in the planned programme.

Safeguarding was effective at the inspection. Staff knew how to respond to concerns, refreshed their knowledge through regular training and paid attention to security. Leaders had introduced supervision and needs-led training for a new staff team, although Ofsted asked them to deepen newer staff's understanding of children's prior learning so progress was supported consistently.
