RIMU Music Day Nursery

Music may be in the name, and movement has equal prominence, but the clearest published picture of RIMU comes from its February 2022 inspection: children explored stories, movement, mathematics and the outdoors in a calm and purposeful setting that day. Ofsted judged the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective. This is an older snapshot rather than a description of current daily practice.

The Ofsted register spans 24 to 60 months at Elsie Marshall Memorial Hall, 1 Vicarage Avenue, Blackheath, while the current branch page presents its preschool provision as being for children aged three and over. Its registration allows 23 places, a whole-setting capacity rather than a room or group size.

In February 2022, learning was active and specific. Children used miniature figures to re-enact We're Going on a Bear Hunt, turning the story's imagined obstacles into sustained play. A worm hunt in the forest-school area became a conversation about shape, length and movement, showing how adults could build vocabulary and early mathematics from a child's discovery. Familiar stories and enthusiastic reading further developed children's enjoyment of books.

Physical development had equal visibility. On the same visit, children danced, took part in gymnastics, used a trampoline and stepped across outdoor logs. The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework: play, adult guidance and observation build children's communication, physical, personal and wider early learning before school. The 2022 examples show that breadth in practice, moving between language, early mathematics, physical control and understanding the natural world.

Independence was deliberately practised in 2022. Everyday routines gave children repeated chances to act for themselves; the hydration station was one clear example. Parents received information about care and learning through an online journal, and relationships with families were strong. The visit recorded smooth arrivals, with children becoming comfortable promptly. Staff modelled language, used open questions and narrated play, although this was not consistent for every child.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective at the inspection. Ofsted found that staff knew the safeguarding procedures, with safer recruitment and site checks supporting that judgement. Regular supervision and training supported the staff team, who worked with management on improvement. Children were highly motivated in play. Adults knew children’s interests and capabilities, then planned enjoyable experiences around them. Oral-health work also had a practical edge: children explained why teeth need brushing while using the hydration station independently. Together, those examples show a setting where care routines and learning were connected rather than treated as separate parts of the day. Two improvements were required: more consistent support for children learning English as an additional language, and better staff deployment during group activities. Current practice may have changed materially since that inspection.

RIMU is at Elsie Marshall Memorial Hall, 1 Vicarage Avenue, Blackheath, London SE3 7JW. The provider subtype is full day care. The register records weekday opening from 08:00 to 18:00, all year apart from bank holidays and one week at Christmas. Families still need to establish whether every booked full day uses that complete opening window and whether part-day alternatives exist.

RIMU publishes funded places for eligible two-, three- and four-year-olds through the 15- and 30-hour schemes for working families. That group-level offer does not settle how this branch schedules funded hours, so families need the Elsie Hall pattern in writing. The provider also says dishes are freshly prepared on site by a resident chef. A current, provider-specific quotation should set out meal charges, the unpublished consumables position and the exact booking options.

• Inspection age. The detailed practice evidence dates from February 2022. Check how language support and staff deployment have developed since Ofsted's visit.
• Booking choices. The opening window does not establish whether full days, part days or minimum weekly attendance are sold. The exact pattern matters when comparing childcare arrangements.
• Day-to-day costs. RIMU publishes funded places and on-site food preparation, but branch-specific funded-hour scheduling, meal charges and the non-food consumables position still need a written breakdown.

RIMU's documented strengths are purposeful outdoor exploration, story-led learning and independence. The 2022 evidence also gives families two precise follow-up points rather than a vague quality label. It may suit parents seeking weekday preschool care from age three who value movement, books and outdoor investigation, provided the nursery's current attendance pattern and practical terms fit their week.
