Nursery at Invicta Primary School

Daily stories and learning to share give Invicta’s early years a clear starting point: language and getting along with other children. The nursery belongs to the school’s Blackheath site on Invicta Road. Children can join from the term following their third birthday, and the nursery groups carry the names Jolly Roger and Buccaneer.
Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Good at its inspection on 17 and 18 April 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) guides nursery learning. Here, its everyday expression includes hearing stories, practising social skills and learning how to participate alongside other children. In April 2024, daily reading and story listening began in early years, giving children regular contact with books and spoken language.
Sharing, listening to others and waiting for a turn are also part of early years learning. Invicta introduces its golden rules at this stage, so learning includes the habits needed to join in with a group. These are practical foundations for a child’s school day: paying attention to someone else, taking turns and working together.
For a family concerned about development or learning, the class teacher is the first contact. Invicta’s school inclusion arrangements allow for classroom adjustments and additional interventions, with outside specialists involved with parental consent. This gives parents a route from an initial conversation to more specific support.
The SEND policy reviewed in autumn 2024 describes an Inclusion Lead across both sites, SENDCo Assistants, Learning Support Assistants and a specialist SEND teacher. Learning mentors and external therapists also form part of that school team, while a Child and Family Support Worker is based at Blackheath. Children receiving two or more interventions have personalised plans, reviewed with parents each term. Those meetings provide a regular opportunity to discuss targets and the next steps in support.
Settling can be adapted for children with SEND. The school’s local offer allows changes to the settling period and liaison with professionals from a child’s previous setting, helping support continue across the move. Physical access is addressed at site level too: Blackheath has a lift serving the second floor, and handrails support use of steps and stairs.
A nursery place does not guarantee admission to Invicta’s Reception. Families must make a separate application through the local authority’s normal process; the school directs them to Royal Greenwich and the online eAdmissions route. Treat that application as a separate task from nursery enrolment.
Nursery attendance is not an oversubscription priority in the linked admission criteria. Familiarity with the school therefore should not be mistaken for an admissions advantage.
For children with SEND moving between classes, the school’s transition arrangements include passing information to the receiving teacher and holding a handover meeting. A personalised transition book can be developed when it would help the child prepare for the change. These support arrangements are separate from allocating a place.
Nursery applications are handled by the school through an online application form. For enquiries, the Blackheath office can be reached on 020 8858 3831 or at admin@invictaprimary.co.uk; the contact form also lets families identify their chosen site.
Invicta directs families to Royal Greenwich’s school term dates. It also allocates five INSET days each year, with dates communicated through newsletters and the school calendar. Include those closure days in childcare planning.
It is at the Blackheath site on Invicta Road, London SE3 7HE.
Children can start in the term after their third birthday. Nursery applications are managed by the school.
No. Reception requires a separate local authority application, and nursery attendance is not a priority in the linked admission criteria.
Children follow the Early Years Foundation Stage. Early years learning includes daily stories and developing skills such as sharing, listening and taking turns.
Speak to your child’s class teacher first. The school’s inclusion arrangements provide for further support and specialist involvement where appropriate, with parental consent for outside agencies.
