Fortis Green Nursery

A calm start and close relationships are the clearest strengths at Fortis Green Nursery. Ofsted rated the provision Good in March 2024, finding that babies and children settled extremely well and formed strong bonds with their key person, co-key person and other familiar staff. The setting has capacity for 62 children.

Education, behaviour, personal development and leadership were all judged Good. Safeguarding arrangements were effective. This gives families a recent independent picture of a happy setting where children were eager to join activities and showed positive attitudes to learning.

The Early Years Foundation Stage sets the areas in which young children learn and develop. In practice, that means staff turn children's interests into play and activities that build communication, physical development and personal skills. Here, staff used books and stories to develop language and an enjoyment of reading. Songs and books were available indoors and outside.

There was useful variety in the detail. Babies used soft play and indoor climbing equipment while learning to walk. Older children ran outdoors, rode wheeled toys and practised pedalling. Children also grew plants, sang dual-language rhymes and heard parents read stories in their home language. These experiences connected physical development, communication and children's understanding of different languages and cultures.

Staff narrated play and emphasised useful vocabulary. Children explored words including lava and eruption, while gentle interactions supported babies' early communication.

Settling-in was adapted to each child, helping staff get to know them well. Parents described helpful guidance and progress, and some had returned with younger siblings. Children with special educational needs and disabilities received tailored help, with staff sharing information with families and other professionals.

Emotional development was practical. Children used mirrors to identify facial expressions and explained whether they felt happy or sad. They also learned routines, friendships, sharing and manners. Inspectors found that safeguarding practice prioritised children's welfare.

Fortis Green Nursery is at 70 Fortis Green, London N2 9EP. It provides full-day care. At the March 2024 inspection, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four.

• Independence. The March 2024 improvement point asked staff to give children more consistent opportunities to serve food, pour drinks and attempt tasks themselves. Families may want to discuss how self-help skills are now built into meals and preparation for school.
• Role play. A second improvement point asked the provider to improve the organisation of role-play activities so staff could reliably implement the intended learning. Parents can explore how practitioners now plan and review these activities.
• Attendance and charges. Families should discuss the attendance pattern they need, together with current charges and what is included, directly with the nursery.

Fortis Green Nursery suits families who value careful settling, warm key-person relationships and learning rooted in stories, talk and children's interests. Concrete observations support that picture, from babies' physical play to language-rich activities and tailored SEND support. The two improvement points are meaningful, but tightly defined: greater consistency in independence and sharper role-play planning.
