Wood Green Preschool

A small, sessional pre-school with room for 22 children, Wood Green Preschool has served families from Partridge Way in Wood Green since registering in 1996. Its strongest documented quality is the freedom children had to choose purposeful play indoors and outside. Ofsted judged the provision Good across every graded area in May 2022.

Children were happy, comfortable and keen to learn in the 2022 evidence. They moved between indoor and outdoor areas, chose activities that interested them and concentrated well. Planting resources prompted shared investigation of a worm in the mud, while climbing, jumping and running circuits built physical confidence. Chalk, paint and construction materials gave children further ways to make, test and explain their ideas.

The Early Years Foundation Stage was the statutory framework for children's learning, development and care through play. Language had a clear place in the day. Children joined daily songs and story time, selected books independently and learned new words during regular small-group sessions. Staff modelled single words for children learning English as an additional language and encouraged repetition. That combination gives parents a concrete picture of a setting where talk, books and play worked together rather than sitting in separate curriculum slots.

Relationships were warm and orderly. Staff used praise, encouragement and simple rules to help children share, cooperate and develop confidence. Children knew the routines and anticipated what came next. Backgrounds and cultures were valued.

The deputy manager acting as SENCO worked with the manager to arrange targeted help without delay, and staff aimed to provide one-to-one support. There was nevertheless a gap: quieter children could remain at the edge of outdoor play with too little interaction. Staff were asked to strengthen interactions in larger groups and sharpen planning around each child's next steps.

At its May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective. Staff understood signs of possible harm, knew how to report concerns and prioritised safeguarding and paediatric first-aid training. Risk assessment was effective, with hazards addressed promptly.

The setting has 22 places in total and operates as sessional day care on non-domestic premises. In 2022, children brought packed lunches and staff used mealtimes to discuss healthy choices and build independence. The dated evidence recorded term-time opening from 9am to 3.30pm on weekdays and funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds. These are dated details rather than current commitments.

Adult interaction outdoors. Staff were asked to involve children more consistently during large-group outdoor play, especially quieter children. Progress since then is an important consideration.
