Child-led planning was strongest among the older group. Practitioners asked children what they wanted to do and helped them work out which resources were needed. This made choice purposeful: children were not simply selecting an activity, but thinking ahead about how to carry it through.

Thinking developed through conversation as well as planned tasks. When a younger child named a puzzle animal incorrectly, a practitioner acknowledged the similarity before supplying the right word. That response kept the exchange positive while extending vocabulary. Staff also used questions during puzzles and counting, so familiar play carried an educational purpose rather than becoming a test.

Relationships were a strength at the 2024 visit. The key-person system helped staff build connections with children and families from the start. When children became unsettled or tired, practitioners responded quickly with reassurance and familiar resources from home to support sleep.

Communication support was specific. Quieter children and those with SEND joined small-group talk sessions designed to build speaking, listening and confidence. Staff also helped children identify feelings, and children responded to a sad friend by offering to share.

Parents described communication as good and valued an online app showing what their children had done each week. They also felt their children were prepared for the next stage of learning. Staff training and local-authority support gave leaders routes to develop practice further. The curriculum was designed to stay consistent as children moved through the nursery, with independence as a shared priority. For parents, that means the strongest evidence is not one isolated activity but a repeated thread: making choices, managing belongings and routines, expressing feelings and gradually taking more responsibility.
