Nursery at Rise Park Infant School

Sunbeams Nursery gives children an early introduction to the world beyond their classroom: a firefighter’s visit has included trying on a real helmet and watching their teacher dress for the job. That is a concrete example of curiosity being turned into learning.
The nursery belongs to Rise Park Infant School on Annan Way in Romford, within Rise Park Academies. There are two nursery cohorts and dedicated nursery provision within the school’s buildings. The school’s age range starts at three. For families, the distinguishing feature is this connection to a larger school community, rather than a separate childcare setting.
Exploring people and their surroundings is part of nursery learning. In March 2023, children were supported to take an interest in others and investigate the environment, including places beyond their immediate setting. The firefighter encounter made the idea of people who help us tangible: children could connect someone’s work with equipment they could try themselves.
White Rose provides the nursery’s mathematics learning overview. This gives its mathematical learning a named framework, alongside the practical exploration described above. In March 2023, early-years learning included extra opportunities to rehearse mathematical ideas, following concerns about gaps in understanding.
Books also matter from the early years onward. In March 2023, the choice of reading included poetry and factual texts, giving children different kinds of language and subjects to encounter. A caution belongs alongside that breadth: the same inspection identified teaching across the school, including mathematics, that sometimes needed greater precision to help pupils extend and use their knowledge. This was a school-wide improvement point, rather than a separate nursery judgement.
Support sits within the wider academies’ team. SENDCO cover runs across the working week, with one role covering Monday to Wednesday and another Wednesday to Friday. Families can contact that team through the school office, giving them a direct route to discuss additional needs.
The academies also have trained Emotional Literacy Support Assistants and an external Play Therapist, each working regularly with a caseload of children. These are school-wide resources; they should not be read as an automatic package of individual nursery support. The infant safeguarding team includes designated leads, alongside wider roles such as a Home School Support Worker and an Education Welfare Officer.
Attending Sunbeams Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. The application route is the London Borough of Havering’s primary admissions service.
Across Rise Park Academies, staff, expertise and systems are shared between the different parts of the school. That provides organisational continuity as children move through it. Keep that continuity separate from the admissions decision: familiarity with the school is not a secured place.
Visits for prospective families can be arranged by appointment. Enquiries can go to office@riseparkacademies.co.uk, the shared academies office.
Holiday planning. Rise Park Academies has a two-week October half term, with its additional week falling before Havering’s October break. Families need to allow for that longer interruption when arranging childcare.
The academies’ uniform colours are yellow, grey and bottle green. Clothing should carry the child’s name, and spare underwear in their bag is recommended for accidents. Those small preparations help children use their own belongings when a change is needed.
