Growing Pains

Growing Pains is a Rainham pre-school with 27 places in total. Ofsted rated it Good in March 2024, with personal development judged Outstanding. Its strongest thread was belonging: children formed close bonds with staff, settled securely and showed confidence in making choices.

Books gave that curriculum much of its character. Children acted out Jack and the Beanstalk, then concentrated on making beanstalk pictures with real leaves and paint. They also helped choose a book for a continuing group topic, giving them a practical say in what came next.

Outdoor learning brought physical challenge and careful teamwork. During a garden bug hunt, children lifted logs with adults, dug for creatures and used magnifying pots, taking turns as they investigated. Staff also made dough with children and drew out their ideas and observations.

Relationships were a defining strength in March 2024. Staff knew their key children closely, and children showed independence, resilience and a strong sense of security. Older children helped younger ones butter toast at breakfast, while adults used shared expectations such as kind hands to support considerate behaviour.

Training in autism and Makaton had strengthened staff confidence in recognising children who might need additional help. Parents described regular, useful communication, especially around children's development, social skills and language. Safeguarding arrangements were effective in March 2024.
