RISE Montessori Nursery

At a Glance

Practical independence gives RISE Montessori Nursery its character: children are encouraged to make choices and try tasks for themselves, with Montessori learning alongside computer classes and gymnastics. Based in the Nursery Main Hall at Shree Swaminarayan Hindu Temple in Pinner, it accepts children from six months to five years and has 70 places in total. The premises include a large, equipped outdoor area, giving physical play space alongside indoor learning.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 29 July 2022 and found safeguarding effective at that inspection. That is a dated judgement. Its useful detail includes children serving their own food, experimenting with quantities and turning to familiar adults for reassurance, rather than simply a set of grades.

Attendance spans full days, mornings, afternoons and a term-time school-day pattern, with different minimum commitments according to age. For parents, that distinction matters as much as the educational approach: the shorter patterns apply to older children, while younger children have a full-day minimum.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

The age groups are Babies, from six months to two years; Toddlers, from two to three; and Preschool, from three to five. These bands describe the stages catered for, while the whole nursery's capacity remains a separate measure. They should not be read as the number of children sharing an activity or spending the day together.

Bright, spacious premises and an equipped outdoor area provide the physical setting. Indoors, furniture and learning resources are selected to encourage exploration and independent activity. The emphasis is on children doing things themselves, with adults providing support rather than taking over each task.

Learning and Activities

The EYFS provides the framework for children's learning and care: play, communication, physical activity and everyday experiences contribute to their development. Montessori sits alongside that framework as an approach emphasising choice, practical skills and learning at a child's own pace. Designated Montessori sessions give that approach a place within a day that also includes free play and more structured activities.

In July 2022, children explored quantities by transferring rice with cups and using scales; adults introduced number words and counting during their conversations. Some children also chose to practise forming numbers. These examples make the mathematical emphasis tangible: early number learning took place through handling materials and talking, alongside attempts at writing.

Computer classes involve Click IT!, whose preschool sessions introduce technology through enjoyable activities. Super Star Sport provides the gymnastics connection through coached sports sessions. French and dance classes add language and movement to the offer. These are additions to the everyday learning programme, rather than substitutes for it, and activities have their own charge structure on funded hours.

Outdoor and Community Life

Outside play has a scheduled place in the daily routine, alongside indoor activities and rest. That matters for a child who needs movement between quieter tasks: outdoor time is part of the day's pattern rather than an incidental extra.

In July 2022, cultural learning included Hanukkah, and resources represented different cultures. Children also gathered to share thoughts and talk about feelings. The combination brought social learning into ordinary activities, through listening to one another and finding words for emotions.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In July 2022, babies sought comfort from their key person and enjoyed staying close to that familiar adult. Staff used simple spoken words with younger children, while sensory activities included tapping tiles and painting with water. These are useful examples for parents of babies: relationships, communication and exploration were woven into the same interactions.

Daily activity logs now give parents access to observations and their child's learning journey. In July 2022, communication also included termly discussions about development and information evenings about early education. The daily log provides a regular connection with nursery life; the dated meetings illustrate a more detailed opportunity to discuss learning.

Before settling begins, families receive the settling procedure. The joining process also provides a Parent Pack, creating a practical sequence between accepting a place and starting attendance. Scheduled sleep or rest periods form part of the daily routine, alongside meals, snacks and play.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

Recruitment checks include employment history and references, and team members undergo enhanced DBS checks. Staff hold paediatric first-aid, food-hygiene and safeguarding qualifications, with continuing training offered.

Fresh vegetarian meals are prepared on the premises, with summer and winter menus organised across four weeks. The nursery's dietary policy includes discussing allergies and individual dietary requirements during settling visits, making that conversation part of preparing for a child's start.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Nursery Main Hall, Shree Swaminarayan Hindu Temple, Bridle Road, Pinner, HA5 2SH. Enquiries can be made through the contact form, by email or by telephone, and the joining process begins with contacting the nursery about the family's requirements. A show-around can be booked, followed by an application pack, fee structure and menu.

Full days run from 8am to 6pm. For children aged six months to two years and two to three years, the minimum is three full days, with no term-time pattern for those ages. For three- to four-year-olds, the full-day attendance minimum is 25 hours per week; the term-time pattern requires four days.

For three-year-olds, morning sessions run from 8am to 1pm and afternoons from 1pm to 6pm, with five mornings or five afternoons as the listed patterns. The term-time School Day runs from 9am to 3.30pm across 38 weeks. Full-time attendance operates across 48 weeks, so families need to distinguish a shorter daily session from a term-time calendar.

Funding and Paid Extras

The nursery accepts 15 funded hours through Universal Funding for three- and four-year-olds from the term following their third birthday, and 30 hours through Working Family Funding subject to eligibility. It also participates in Tax-Free Childcare. Funded entitlement and privately paid additional hours are treated separately, with the funding delivery question below needing attention before a family chooses a pattern.

Meals, snacks and drinks are charged separately from funded childcare, as are non-food consumables including nappies, wipes and beds; the fee sheet incorporates these charges and additional private hours into the monthly total. Activities also carry additional charges for funded hours, and families wishing to opt out can discuss the options with the manager, while funded-only attendance rows identify an optional tea charge.

A non-refundable registration charge and a deposit are part of joining. The deposit is refundable when the child leaves, and nursery fees are payable monthly in advance. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation; the fees page explains the attendance and charge structure.

Things to Consider

  • Precision in learning. At the July 2022 inspection, Ofsted asked for clearer intended learning in planned activities because some children's understanding was insufficiently extended. On a visit, ask how staff now turn an activity into a specific next step for your child.
  • Funding delivery. The funding explanation specifies stretched delivery only, but the same fee structure includes funded-only attendance over 38 weeks and term-time tables. This conflict needs resolving in a written quotation that identifies the attendance calendar, funded hours and additional charges for your chosen pattern.
  • Younger children's commitment. Under-three attendance requires three full days rather than the term-time option. During a show-around, discuss how that commitment fits your child's rest routine and ask about the group size they would join.
  • Vegetarian food and allergies. Food is vegetarian and cooked onsite, with dietary requirements discussed during settling visits. Allergy-affected families should confirm current preparation and serving arrangements as part of that discussion.

The Verdict

RISE suits families who value Montessori choice and practical independence, with named computer and sports partners adding concrete activities to the day. It serves parents seeking full days as well as those considering mornings, afternoons or term-time school days for older children. That breadth has age-specific limits.

The July 2022 Good judgement provides a useful inspection reference, but the learning-planning concern deserves a direct conversation. For working families, the deciding practical issue is whether the age-specific booking commitment and the written funding calculation fit together. The vegetarian menu and onsite preparation will also be a meaningful part of the choice.
