At its November 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good, found safeguarding effective and described support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities through planning around their individual next steps. The setting has capacity for 36 children at The Homestead, Fine Bush Lane, Harefield, Uxbridge, UB9 6LY.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets requirements for children's learning, development and care: play supports learning alongside everyday routines. In November 2023, staff used children's interests and conversations with parents to plan manageable steps in their learning.

Construction play that month involved children working together on a road made from planks for their trucks. The activity combined a shared task with opportunities to solve practical problems. Elsewhere, cars rolled into a tube prompted children to experiment: changing its angle helped them retrieve the cars. Persistence mattered alongside the finished result. These examples show what learning through play meant during that inspection: children had materials to manipulate, a problem to tackle and other children or staff to talk with as they tried an answer. Teaching proceeded in small stages, building on children's existing understanding.

Sensory experiences differed by age that month. Babies explored flour with spoons, while toddlers painted shaving foam onto a window, making broad movements with their arms. Older children joined a regular play dough disco, exercising their fingers to support early writing. These were practical experiences with materials, movement and language.

Outside in November 2023, the field provided space for running and climbing, while tricycles and cars in the playground added opportunities to practise movement. Children also examined twigs and leaves, experimented with lights in a darkened room and watched for bats as daylight faded.

Care and Support

Relationships supported the day in November 2023. Staff offered comfort and encouragement, left children time to answer questions and used songs and rhyming stories to develop conversation. Moves between rooms happened gradually, allowing children to become familiar with their next surroundings.

Language work in November 2023 was woven into familiar activities. Younger children accompanied songs with actions, linking words with movement; older children explored rhyme during stories, contributing examples such as house and mouse. Staff's questions invited children to think, while pauses gave them room to respond. This gave conversation a place alongside sensory and physical play rather than treating it as a separate exercise. Room transitions also involved introductions over time, with readiness for the next stage guiding the move. For a child facing a change of surroundings, that gradual approach made familiarity part of the preparation.

Staff development in November 2023 included regular training and supervision. Discussions with the manager covered staff wellbeing, what practitioners did well and where their work needed attention. Staff valued this support. The practical significance is the attention given to adults' work as well as children's activities: training refreshed knowledge, while supervision provided a setting for discussing practice and identifying improvements. These arrangements belonged to the nursery's operation at that inspection.

Daily conversations with parents covered sleep and how children were feeling; updates continued beyond those conversations. Meals accommodated dietary needs, and children practised using cutlery and washing their hands. However, in November 2023, younger children sometimes became unsettled while waiting too long for meals. This was the improvement priority.

  • Attendance arrangements. The November 2023 opening window covered weekdays throughout the year. What booking patterns and funded-hours arrangements would apply to your child?

The Verdict

The Homestead suits families who value outdoor exploration, sensory play and gradual room transitions, all part of children's experiences in November 2023. Its November 2023 inspection provides a positive quality judgement, balanced by a specific concern about mealtime waiting.
