The Young Ones

Songs, stories and hands-on exploration give The Young Ones its clearest documented character. Children were happy, secure and keen to play with friends and adults. Babies settled with support from familiar practitioners, while older children managed coats, shoes and lunch more independently. The evidence also identifies one clear improvement: adults needed to give children more freedom to explore activities in their own way.

The Early Years Foundation Stage gives English nurseries a framework for learning through communication, physical development, relationships and play. Here, those areas worked together rather than as formal lessons. Staff used We're Going on a Bear Hunt to introduce positional words and imaginative movement. A daffodil-painting activity combined comparison, texture, plant vocabulary and sensory exploration.

Music was woven into routines. Children copied actions during music and movement, heard spontaneous singing from staff and used a song at tidy-up time. Those repeated, enjoyable exchanges can help younger children connect words, actions and expectations.

Independence was strongest among older children, who put on outdoor clothing and served their own lunch. The main reservation is equally practical. Adults sometimes directed activities too closely, causing children to lose interest and limiting the chance to test their own ideas. The difference matters: an adult can introduce words such as stem, petals, under and on top while still leaving room for a child to decide what to paint, build or act out. That balance is the most useful measure of progress against the improvement point.

The March 2023 snapshot recorded 38 places and 42 children on roll. Those are whole-setting figures across attendance patterns, not a room size or a count of children present together. It also recorded nine staff, five qualified at level 3 or above, with managers qualified at level 6. These dated figures provide context rather than a promise about today's staffing.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective in March 2023. Staff understood signs of abuse, local procedures and wider risks, and leaders refreshed safeguarding knowledge in meetings. Children also learned everyday safety by cleaning spillages. Parent partnership had visible substance too: a Mother's Day stay-and-play session brought families into the setting, and parents were positive about children's progress.

The provider record describes full day care, Monday to Friday, with an opening window of 8am to 6pm and operation across 48 weeks. The evidence identifies the provision as full day care; current contracted times remain a decision point for families.

Funded early education was provided for two-, three- and four-year-olds in March 2023. Eligibility, delivery pattern, charges, meals, consumables, settling and notice terms are best considered together in a child-specific quotation.
