Bennett Court Community Playgroup

Small-group activity, music and thoughtful support for communication stood out when Ofsted inspected Bennett Court Community Playgroup in September 2022. It rated the sessional playgroup Good, with behaviour and attitudes judged Outstanding. The setting has capacity for 28 children at Bennett Court Social Club on Axminster Road in Islington.

The findings described happy, settled children who formed secure relationships with kind staff. Children directed much of their own play, then came together for stories, number work, action songs and other group experiences. Dated evidence cannot promise today's daily programme, but it gives families useful insight into the playgroup's character.

The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the educational framework, covering communication, physical and personal development alongside literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts. In September 2022, staff built an ambitious curriculum around children's interests. Children explored vocabulary through bubbles, movement and stories, while everyday routines developed practical independence.

Music had a clear place. A visiting music teacher worked with the playgroup, and children joined action songs and shared instruments. Outdoor provision also mattered: children with SEND used the playground to run, climb and balance, learning to judge manageable risks and remind friends how to stay safe.

In 2022, relationships were a strength. Staff understood their key children, shared learning and next steps with parents through conversations, newsletters and online communication, and used home visits to help new children settle. Staff also used newly learned signs to help children experiencing speech and language delays communicate.

Support for children with SEND was judged especially effective. The team worked with professionals and local schools, used additional funding for personalised help and maintained a strong emphasis on inclusion and communication. Safeguarding arrangements were effective in 2022: staff received regular training, understood local risks and knew how to report concerns.

There was room to sharpen teaching. Adult interaction was not equally strong across the playgroup, and the provider was asked to target work with older children more precisely. Planning did not always account fully for each child's next steps.

The playgroup is based at Bennett Court Social Club, Axminster Road, London N7 6BN. In September 2022 it cared for children aged two to four and provided a weekday term-time day from 9am to 3pm, alongside funded early education.

Parents provided healthy lunches at that time. Staff ate with children and used lunch to reinforce handwashing, healthy choices and practical skills such as using a fork.
