A separate outdoor space for babies, an all-weather play area and a rear garden give Pavilion Preparatory School and Kindergarten a clear physical character. Set within Repton Park in Woodford Green, it provides spacious playrooms and outdoor space for children to crawl, explore and become more independent. Outdoor play has a substantial place here.
At its May 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged its safeguarding arrangements effective. The improvement priorities were specific: richer opportunities for younger children to explore and create, and professional development that takes staff practice further. Those points matter alongside the positive judgement, especially for parents choosing care for a baby or toddler.
Pavilion accepts children from birth to five and has 64 places in total. Its weekday opening hours are 8am to 6pm, with both full-time and part-time attendance recognised in its admissions arrangements.
The building contains spacious playrooms. Outside, babies have their own area for practising early movement, while an all-weather space contains adventure play equipment and the rear garden supports free-flow play. These are useful differences for families comparing outdoor provision: early crawling and walking have a dedicated space, and outdoor activity has more than one setting.
Pavilion follows the Early Years Foundation Stage, the framework covering children's communication, movement, relationships, early literacy and mathematics, understanding of the world and creative expression. In everyday terms, that means learning through conversation, stories, physical activity, exploration and play.
Children's interests shape the planning. Practitioners observe their development and use those observations to select experiences and resources; individual Learning Journals then connect that planning with feedback to families. Books, songs and music sit alongside scientific understanding, imaginative play and opportunities to make decisions. The practical value is continuity: an interest can become the starting point for the next experience.
In May 2024, children investigated insects through a garden bug hotel and explored how bees produce honey. Older children made insect creations with materials including stones and cardboard, while toddlers explored animal names and sounds. Babies' early communication was supported with Makaton signs. These examples illustrate different activities and communication support for older children, toddlers and babies, although younger children's opportunities for imaginative and sensory exploration needed extending.
Repton Park provides the wider setting, with Claybury forest surrounding its parkland. Pavilion has also taken children on a Trip to Hainault Forest and a Forest Autumn Walk. These outings add experiences beyond the nursery's own garden; they should be understood as examples of trips rather than a fixed outings timetable.
Family celebrations include the annual Easter bonnet Parade and Christmas party. The Easter event involves bonnets, making it a shared activity between children and families as well as a celebration. In May 2024, recent Easter activities included an egg hunt and tea party, and children learned about religious celebrations including Eid. The emphasis is on recognising different family traditions through concrete activities.
Settling starts with information about the child. After admission forms are completed, families receive a welcome pack containing a handbook, preparation advice and details of a home visit service. Free settling sessions are arranged individually, with time for parents to remain in the room and help staff understand their child's interests, care requirements and medical or dietary needs. That gives staff practical information before ordinary attendance begins.
For babies, sleep and feeding follow individual patterns to maintain continuity with home. Early independence is also part of the care approach, including learning to feed themselves and developing movement. A family's existing routine therefore has a place in planning the nursery day.
Communication combines daily diaries, shared records of achievements and observations from home with regular progress meetings. Learning Journals and an end-of-year summary provide another way to discuss development over time. Parents can raise concerns through the open-door arrangement, rather than waiting for a scheduled meeting.
At the May 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that the special educational needs coordinator raised concerns promptly with parents and organised support, while staff used home-language phrases and visual prompts for children learning English as an additional language. This is useful detail about how support worked at that visit, rather than a general promise about every child's experience.
Current security arrangements include controlled access, accompanied visitors and procedures for collection by an unfamiliar adult. A no-mobile-phone policy also operates. These are practical arrangements for managing access and conduct around children.
Meals are provided, and children are encouraged to try unfamiliar foods and develop independence while eating. Food is therefore part of the daily learning experience as well as care.
The address is The Pavilion, Repton Park, Clarence Gate, Woodford Green, London IG8 8GQ. Pavilion opens Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, across 51 weeks of the year, excluding statutory holidays; the Christmas closure runs from Christmas Day through New Year’s Day, with reopening on the first working day afterwards.
Admissions recognise both full-time and part-time places. Children with siblings already attending are an admissions priority, and a full-time application may receive preference over a part-time one depending on work commitments, occupancy and room availability. Families complete a contract and the required documentation before attendance. Enquiries can be made through the admissions form, by telephone on 020 8505 6565 or by email to info@pavilionprep.org.uk.
Off-road parking serves collection and drop-off. The nursery sits within Repton Park's gated grounds, so the estate location is a practical part of the journey as well as its outdoor character.
In May 2024, Pavilion received funding for free early education for children aged two, three and four. Families should obtain current prices through the nursery's written quotation.
Pavilion suits families seeking either full-time or part-time attendance who value outdoor space, individual baby routines and regular exchanges about their child's development. The separate baby play area and free-flow garden are tangible strengths, while settling sessions give families a structured way to share care needs.
The Good judgement from May 2024 provides a positive inspection position, with clear questions about younger children's creative experiences and further staff development. For parents of the youngest children, those questions deserve as much attention as the playrooms and grounds.
