Nursery at Roding Primary School

Play chosen by children, adults joining their learning, and British Sign Language give Roding’s nursery its character. Every child at Roding learns BSL, making communication with deaf peers part of the curriculum. This is the school’s own nursery on Roding Lane North in Woodford Green, accepting children from age three.
Morning and afternoon provision is described as having 30 places; a limited number of all-day places also forms part of the early-years offer. Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good at its November 2024 inspection. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Children’s interests help shape the learning. The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings together talking, physical development and relationships with early literacy, maths, creative expression and exploration of the world. Roding combines activities directed by adults with play initiated by children, so the session includes both guidance and room for individual choices.
Objective led planning means adults develop learning within a child’s existing play. The Focus Child Approach gives children closer attention in turn, with observations used to adapt activities and the environment to their interests and needs. From the spring term, children are also invited into small learning groups with an adult. The balance shifts gradually.
Learning takes place indoors and outside, with outdoor access treated as a continuing part of early-years provision. In November 2024, children maintained their attention through carefully organised activities and resources, including tasks involving fine movements of the hands and fingers. Number rhymes and songs were another feature children enjoyed. These are concrete ways of practising concentration, coordination and early mathematical learning.
Support includes sessions addressing speech and language, interaction with others and fine motor development, alongside help with phonics and maths. Individual plans can provide for learning outside the classroom when sensory needs require it. In November 2024, staff recognised SEND early and used appropriate equipment to support children’s learning. For families, this makes individual needs part of planning from the outset.
Tapestry holds photographs, videos and records of learning; parents can contribute experiences from home to help teachers plan what comes next. Snacks are available during early-years provision. For a long-term medical condition, the school develops a care plan with parents. Its medical policy also says staff do not give children medicines, a practical consideration for families managing treatment during the day.
Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate school application through the Redbridge website, including children already attending Roding’s nursery. Treat choosing the nursery and applying for Reception as two separate decisions, and submit the Reception application by the deadline for the relevant admissions year.
Morning, afternoon and limited all-day provision give families different session options. To request a nursery place, families can collect an application form from school reception or use the linked form. After an offer, the school invites families for a tour; it also describes meetings with the leadership and support team in the term before children start. These provide an introduction to the people involved in school life.
Contact the Admin Reception team on 020 8504 3706 or email admin@rodingprimary.co.uk for enquiries. Inclusion enquiries have a separate route: inclusion@rodingprimary.co.uk. Class concerns should first go to the teacher, with an appointment arranged directly or through the office; unresolved matters can then go to a Phase Leader.
