Nine children at a time in the baby room, four age-group rooms and a daily outdoor routine give Peter Pans Day Nursery a clear shape. Babies have ground-floor space, while preschool children have their own room upstairs. The practical appeal is the detail: familiar baby routines, gradual room changes and an online journal that connects learning with everyday care.
In April 2024, the nursery was rated Good and safeguarding was judged effective. That is a dated judgement, with two clear development points: strengthening staff understanding of child development and extending children's experiences beyond the nursery.
The setting takes children aged 3 months to 5 years in Barkingside. Full-time attendance and part-time bookings across one to four days are offered, giving families more than one way to use the nursery.
Two toddler rooms cover the same age band. The baby room's nine-child cap is a maximum, rather than a daily attendance count.
Michael's Room accommodates up to 9 babies aged 3 months to 2 years on the ground floor, combining language, movement and social development with a book corner, role play, soft play and a separate changing area with a full-size sink.
Tinkerbell's Room takes younger toddlers aged 2 to 3 years, with a cap of 8, and its ground-floor book, role-play and comfortable corners support language, physical and social development alongside daily creative activities.
John's Room takes children aged 2 to 3 years on the first floor.
Wendy's Room takes preschool children aged 3 to 5 years on the first floor.
Room changes are gradual rather than simply a change of door. Babies move towards Tinkerbell's Room at their own pace, and the same approach applies to the move from there into John's Room. A new key person is allocated in Tinkerbell's Room, making the handover between familiar adults an important part of that transition.
The EYFS provides the framework for learning and care: children learn through purposeful play, with opportunities to choose activities and join those led by adults. It is the foundation of the day, rather than an extra programme. Here, planned activities sit alongside children's own interests, so adult direction and independent exploration both have a place.
In Michael's Room and Tinkerbell's Room, daily activities include music, singing, creative work and play with sand and water. Activities change daily, giving babies and younger toddlers different opportunities to explore.
In April 2024, babies practised moving independently, including using a wheeled push-along toy, and staff encouraged them to feed themselves. Toddlers were given time to start conversations before adults added language, while older children shared books during daily story sessions.
There was a limitation in April 2024 too. Staff understanding of children's development was uneven, and some exchanges with children lacked the depth needed to take learning further. The development point was specific: staff supervision needed a clearer emphasis on individual childcare knowledge.
The secure, astro-turfed outdoor area is used daily, including in wet or cold weather. Outdoor play is therefore part of the routine, with suitable clothing making participation practical across the seasons.
In April 2024, a changed garden layout gave children more resources and opportunities to explore learning outdoors. Indoors, singing, painting, drawing and making shapes in sand provided different ways to express ideas. Resources and festival celebrations also introduced children to differences between people and ways of life.
The wider-world offer was a development point in April 2024. Further opportunities to learn beyond the nursery were being considered but had not been put into practice at that visit.
Every child has a key person, giving families a main practitioner responsible for their care. For younger babies, the nursery follows their existing routine, helping the move into childcare fit around familiar patterns. Room transitions are paced to the child rather than presented as a single abrupt switch.
Tapestry is the nursery's online learning journal, combining observations, photographs, videos and assessments with contributions from parents. Families can comment on nursery entries and add examples from home, so the account of a child's development can include both settings.
Its Care Diary records meals, drinks, toileting and naps, with accident forms and a messaging tool alongside them. Termly newsletters are shared through the journal's document function. This gives communication two useful strands: what a child is learning and how their day has gone.
In April 2024, staff also offered parental consultations and advice on supporting learning at home, including helping children manage disagreements.
At the April 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received effective support through observation, assessment, timely agency referrals and individual care, and that children made good progress from their starting points. The useful detail is the mechanism: staff identified needs early and sought additional help where required.
Practitioners are qualified, and the nursery requires first-aid training to be refreshed every 3 years. Recruitment arrangements include DBS checks and references before employment. These are care arrangements, while the safeguarding judgement remains the dated inspection finding above.
Children receive breakfast, lunch and tea, plus two snacks, with water offered throughout the day and menus following a 3-week cycle. For babies, solid food can be blended during weaning, and special dietary requirements are accommodated.
Parents supply nappies, wipes, creams and formula for babies. Staff can sterilise bottles and prepare feeds, or parents can send feeds already prepared. This separates what the nursery does from what needs to come from home, an especially useful distinction during the first months of attendance.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday between 8am and 6pm. These are opening hours; attendance is offered on a full-time basis or part-time across 1, 2, 3 or 4 days a week. Families can therefore choose regular attendance across the working week or a smaller number of nursery days.
It operates for 51 weeks each year, closing on bank holidays and for the week between Christmas and New Year. Those closures belong in childcare planning even when the usual weekly booking stays the same.
The address is 2 Thomas Barnardo Way, Barkingside, Ilford, IG6 1FY. The car approach runs from Tanners Lane through Court Way to Thomas Barnardos Way, with the pick-up and drop-off point beside the church and access controlled by video intercom.
Barkingside station is served by the Central line, and the pedestrian approach uses Craven Gardens. These named access points help families assess the journey against their own daily route.
In April 2024, the nursery received early-education funding for children aged two, three and four. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.
Peter Pans Day Nursery suits families choosing either full-time attendance or part-time care across selected weekdays, especially those who value an explicitly capped baby room and detailed communication about care and learning. The room structure separates baby care, toddler provision and preschool.
Daily outdoor play, gradual room changes and Tapestry are practical strengths, balanced against the April 2024 priorities for staff interactions and experiences beyond the nursery.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good in April 2024 and judged safeguarding effective. Development points concerned staff understanding of child development and experiences beyond the nursery.
Michael's Room takes babies aged 3 months to 2 years; Tinkerbell's Room and John's Room cover ages 2 to 3; Wendy's Room takes children aged 3 to 5.
