Ruskin Road Pre-School is a 32-place sessional setting at Carshalton Methodist Church on Ruskin Road, Carshalton. Practitioners used purposeful conversation, and a small-group fruit activity moved from naming fruit to discussing what grows on trees and building longer sentences. Mathematics was woven into play through shapes, written numbers, counting sides and comparing larger and smaller objects. These are concrete routes into the Early Years Foundation Stage, the statutory framework that organises young children's learning through communication, physical development, personal and social growth, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts.

Choice mattered too. Children selected cars, blocks and role play, while staff planned from what each child needed to learn next. Some practised writing names and letters; others retold stories to extend communication. In the garden, chalk writing sat alongside running and exploration with friends.

Relationships looked warm and productive in January 2023. Children sought out staff, learned to share and take turns, and received clear praise for considerate behaviour. Everyday routines developed independence through handwashing, using the bathroom and putting on coats, shoes and gloves.

Staff identified children needing extra support and worked with external agencies. Links with schools helped practitioners pass on information about children's knowledge and skills. Parents told the inspector that communication was frequent and that ideas from staff helped them continue learning at home.

Safeguarding arrangements were effective at the inspection. Staff understood signs of abuse or neglect, reporting routes and risk assessment, while ongoing suitability was checked.

The setting is at Carshalton Methodist Church, Ruskin Road, Carshalton, SM5 3DE. The dated record gives weekday morning sessions from 9.30am to 12.30pm and afternoon sessions from 12.30pm to 2.30pm during term time. It also recorded funded early education for three- and four-year-olds. Families need a current provider-specific quotation for charges.
