Kiddies Kingdom, Addington Court

At a Glance

Books borrowed for home and discoveries from a local park gave Kiddies Kingdom, Addington Court a recognisable character in May 2024: learning connected children's interests with their daily play. At its 17 May 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective.

The nursery has capacity for 32 children aged 6 to 60 months. The account of nursery life below describes May 2024 practice, including strengths in language and clear points for improvement.

The Nursery Experience

In May 2024, the early years foundation stage provided the framework for children's learning, development and care, with play used to develop communication, early literacy and social skills. Personal, social and emotional development shaped the curriculum. Gentle prompts helped children practise sharing and kindness.

A quieter space within the group room gave children preparing for school somewhere to experiment with writing materials and recognise initial sounds. A comfortable reading area held familiar books, while a small lending library extended story-sharing into the home. These were practical links between play and early literacy.

A local park visit prompted exploration of insects and other creatures through stories, songs and dough creations. Frogs and butterflies introduced life cycles and new vocabulary. However, adults sometimes intervened too quickly, reducing children's opportunities to work out solutions themselves. Activity timing also needed attention: some children had left before caterpillars were first introduced.

Care and Support

At the May 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that children learning English as an additional language settled successfully, and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities received help to manage emotions and changes in routine.

In May 2024, staff learnt useful home-language words from parents; visual prompts helped children understand routines and locate materials. Children needing preparation for a change, including returning indoors from the garden, were given time to adjust.

Key persons observed learning and discussed next steps with colleagues, informing daily plans. Regular supervision, coaching and training supported staff development. Communication with families needed more precision, though: some parents were unsure how to build on learning at home.

Practical Information

The address is 3 Addington Court, Addington Way, Luton, LU4 9FZ. Opening hours are 8.45am to 3.15pm, Monday to Friday, during term time, with closure during school holidays.

In May 2024, funded early education was provided for children aged two, three and four. This describes the funding provision at that time.

Things to Consider

  • Independent thinking and activity timing. In May 2024, children needed longer to solve problems, and adult-led activities needed better planning around timing, location and group size. These points matter for children attending different parts of the day.
  • Learning at home. In May 2024, some parents needed clearer guidance linked to their child's next learning steps. The lending library supported shared reading, but communication needed to go further.
  • Care for younger children. The current age range starts at 6 months, while the children attending in May 2024 were aged two to four. At a visit, how are settling and daily care organised for the youngest children?

The Verdict

For families seeking term-time care, the May 2024 picture offers useful strengths: interest-led exploration, accessible books and practical language support. The Good judgement sits alongside specific improvements needed in independent thinking, activity planning and guidance for parents. Those details give families a clearer basis for judging the nursery than the grade alone.
