Mayflower Playgroup

At a Glance

Rainwater measurements, homemade volcanoes and snails gave Mayflower Playgroup's June 2022 learning a practical, exploratory character. These were small experiences with clear purposes: testing ideas, finding words and noticing how living things behave.

Mayflower Playgroup has capacity for 45 children at Christ Church in Haywards Heath. Children attending in June 2022 were aged two to four. Ofsted rated the setting Good at its June 2022 inspection. The important reservation concerned staff organisation indoors, where noise sometimes interrupted children's concentration.

The Nursery Experience

In June 2022, children used the garden in different weather conditions, measuring collected rainwater and investigating how objects travelled down a drainpipe. Watching snails prompted discussion about their protective shells. Measuring rainwater connected outdoor investigation with early mathematics.

The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning and care, linking play with developing language, physical skills and independence. In June 2022, building with shapes encouraged children to solve balance problems, while younger children counted birthday-cake candles and experimented with paint colours. Volcano-making gave children a reason to practise new vocabulary.

Recognising their names and photographs on pegs and trays also connected early literacy with familiar routines. These June 2022 examples made learning useful beyond a planned activity.

Care and Support

At its June 2022 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding, good progress and targeted help for children with special educational needs or disabilities, with staff and other professionals coordinating support. These judgements belong to that inspection date.

In June 2022, children had close relationships with staff and their key person. Practitioners allowed children learning English extra time to respond, and helped children recognise feelings in themselves and others. Putting on outdoor clothing gave children opportunities to practise looking after themselves.

Online profiles and resources to take home supported communication with families in June 2022. Staff sought parents' views about children's next steps, and preparation for moving to school formed part of their work. Supervision meetings and planned professional development supported staff practice; training had added ways to help emotional wellbeing. Snack-time fruit tasting encouraged discussion about healthy food choices.

Practical Information

The address is Christ Church, New England Road, Haywards Heath, RH16 3LE.

In June 2022, opening hours were 9.15am to 2.45pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 9.15am to 1.15pm on Tuesday, and 9.15am to 12.15pm on Friday. Operation was term-time only. Funded early education for two-, three- and four-year-olds formed part of the June 2022 provision.

Things to Consider

  • Indoor concentration. In June 2022, staff deployment sometimes delayed responses to unwanted behaviour, allowing noise to rise and disrupting concentration. During a visit, ask how staff now organise support during busy indoor activities.
  • Term-time planning. The June 2022 timetable combined longer opening windows on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday with earlier finishes on Tuesday and Friday. How would the current attendance arrangements fit your working week and school holidays?

The Verdict

Mayflower's June 2022 picture suits families who value hands-on exploration, outdoor investigation and opportunities for children to become more independent. Its term-time timetable would have suited families needing daytime care with different finishing times across the week. The balance is clear: engaging learning examples and attentive relationships, alongside a specific concern about indoor organisation and noise.
