Elmer Class gives this nursery its identity, while early writing stretches from indoor activities to outdoor mark-making. This is Warden Park Primary Academy’s own nursery in Haywards Heath, caring for children aged 2 to 5. Children can join from the term after their second birthday.
The nursery belongs to the school’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) team, with a nursery teacher and teaching assistants. Its practical shape is clear: families can choose a morning, an afternoon or a full day, with a lunch extension available for morning children.
Early writing starts with making marks, both outdoors and inside. Adults demonstrate how writing serves a purpose, and children begin to write their names and connect letters with spoken sounds according to their development. The approach follows children’s stage rather than expecting the same work from everyone of the same age. That gives families a concrete picture of learning before formal writing becomes fluent.
Read Write Inc. begins in Nursery. It introduces the relationship between letters and sounds and how sounds combine into words. Alongside it, cued articulation uses actions to show how sounds are made, adding a physical way to explore spoken language.
A nursery teacher works alongside teaching assistants within the wider early-years team. For parents with questions or concerns, class teachers and teaching assistants are the first contacts; the early-years team leader provides the next step when an issue needs further discussion.
Support for special educational needs and/or disabilities includes early identification, discussion with families and targeted classroom strategies. Speech Therapists, Educational Psychologists and the ASCEND hub are among the school’s support links. Where needed, children can receive individual or small-group support, with an Individual Support Plan setting out resources and strategies for accessing classroom learning. Families are involved in decisions about that support.
Hot lunches are optional and carry a separate charge. Parents book them through the Arbor Parent Portal App, making lunch a practical addition to the nursery booking rather than an automatic part of every session.
A separate application matters. Attending this nursery does not guarantee a Reception place at Warden Park Primary Academy. Families must apply again through the normal Reception admissions process and meet the deadline for their entry year.
The application route is West Sussex County Council’s Pupil Admissions Office. Keep that application separate from nursery registration: arranging nursery childcare and applying for a school place are different tasks.
Term-time sessions run from 8:45 to 11:45 in the morning and 12:15 to 15:15 in the afternoon. A full day runs from 8:45 to 15:15; morning children can add lunch and stay until 12:15. These choices let families match a shorter session or a longer nursery day to their arrangements.
New children start in September, January or April, rather than partway through a term or half term. Registration requires a completed form and signed terms and conditions. Families using funded hours also complete a parent declaration, with a funding code required for two-year-old early funding or extended funding for children over three.
Children receive 15 funded hours from the term after turning 3, and working families may apply for another 15 hours. Paid sessions require a deposit before admission, refundable on leaving once outstanding fees are settled. Contact the school for current charges.
Bank holidays and inset days are nursery closures, and some nursery inset dates differ from the school’s. Report an absence by 9:00 through Studybugs or by telephone. Nursery enquiries go to nursery@wardenparkprimary.co.uk or 01444 451264; academy tours can be arranged through the school office.
