Buying milk for snack time and checking the garden for litter gave everyday tasks a learning purpose at Vicarage Farm Pre-School in September 2024. Children practised talking to shop staff and helped make their outdoor space safe. Small responsibilities mattered here.
Ofsted rated the pre-school Good on 6 September 2024 and found safeguarding effective. Based at Vicarage Farm Community Centre in Wellingborough, it has 26 places in total; children attending at that visit were aged one to four.
The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: everyday play supports learning alongside their practical and personal development.
In September 2024, water play introduced floating and sinking through stones and pom-poms. Shopping trips extended learning beyond the setting, with children buying milk and asking for a receipt. These were concrete opportunities to explore materials and practise conversation.
Books showing facial expressions helped younger children name emotions, while older children discussed what upset them and whom they could turn to. Outdoors, children joined garden safety checks and removed litter. Staff also reminded them to wear hats in sunny weather, linking safety with actions children could understand.
At the September 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that staff used assessments to identify developmental gaps and refer children to other professionals, with additional funding supporting individual needs through resources including books in another language.
Practical support was visible in the same month. Pictures explained the snack-time routine and encouraged children to participate. Children chose cups and bowls, poured drinks and received gentle prompts to wipe their own noses. These tasks gave them manageable steps towards independence.
Toothbrushing followed lunch, and matching toothbrushes went home to encourage the habit there too. Nutritious snacks accompanied conversations about food origins, including explaining that milk comes from cows before reaching a supermarket. Staff shared water-safety advice with parents, extending practical guidance beyond the setting.

In September 2024, the pre-school operated Monday to Friday during term time, with sessions running from 8.30am to 2.30pm. It also provided funded early education for children aged nine months upwards at that time. That funding description is separate from the ages of children attending the visit.
Vicarage Farm Pre-School suits families drawn to practical learning and growing independence: shopping, managing snack-time tasks and caring for the garden all featured in September 2024. Its Good judgement provides a positive inspection position, balanced by a specific need to strengthen how staff encourage conversation. The term-time daytime pattern recorded then will be most relevant to families seeking care around that routine.
