Child 1st, Coleshill

At a Glance

Bicycles, homemade ball ramps and autumn leaves give Child 1st, Coleshill a recognisable character: children learning by trying things for themselves. In October 2023, these experiences sat alongside practical steps towards independence, from handling cutlery to choosing creative tools. The detail matters more than a broad promise of school preparation.

At its 4 October 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good overall and found that children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, were gaining the understanding needed for their next stages of learning. Two improvements qualified that positive judgement: making better use of parents’ initial information and maintaining outdoor resources so children could reach what they needed.

The nursery has capacity for 88 children aged 3 to 60 months, at Father Hudsons Complex in Coleshill. Its opening hours are 8am to 6pm on weekdays.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children’s learning, development and care here. In parent language, that brings everyday communication, physical development and learning into the same day, rather than treating education and care as separate jobs.

In October 2023, babies had space to work on walking, with furniture positioned to help younger children pull themselves upright. Toddlers and preschool children could select tools and creative materials, giving them a practical say in what they tried next. These were different arrangements for different stages, rather than one activity expected to suit everyone.

Stories, songs and rhymes supported conversation that October, including material in children’s other home languages. Staff used questions to draw out ideas and understand what children knew. The useful distinction is between simply hearing language and having opportunities to use it.

Mathematical experiences were concrete. In October 2023, older children counted discs and began recognising numerals. With staff help, they sorted discs by size and put them on a rod. Children named the colours of collected autumn objects and practised scissor control by snipping string or leaves. Safety explanations accompanied the tools.

Outdoor and Community Life

In October 2023, toddlers shared bicycles outdoors, while climbing and balancing gave younger children opportunities to practise movement with staff support. Preschool children assembled pipes and frames into ramps for rolling balls. That combined making something with testing how it worked.

The outdoor experience also had a weakness that October: some resources were difficult for children to access, and parts of the space needed better upkeep. For families who value outdoor play, accessibility matters alongside the activities themselves. A resource only helps independent play when a child can use it.

Care and Support

Independence extended into personal care in October 2023. Babies practised feeding themselves with suitable cutlery, toddlers worked on handwashing, and older children served lunch using manageable utensils. These small tasks gave children opportunities to participate in their own care, with praise for their efforts.

That October, staff offered physical comfort when children sought it and used discussions suited to children’s understanding to explain turn-taking and the effect of behaviour on others. Support was expressed through everyday interactions as well as activities. Parents received information about care and learning in person and online.

At the October 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective, with staff understanding how to raise and escalate welfare concerns and procedures for checking staff suitability. This is a dated judgement, rather than a guarantee about future practice.

Initial communication needed more purpose in October 2023. Staff collected information from families when children started, but did not use it precisely enough to shape early learning plans. The issue was how that information influenced the child’s first experiences, rather than whether it was collected.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Father Hudsons Complex, Coventry Road, Coleshill, B46 3EA. Opening runs from Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, across the year, with bank holidays and a week at Christmas excluded. Those closures matter when matching childcare with working arrangements.

Funding and Paid Extras

In October 2023, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four.

Things to Consider

  • Starting-point information. In October 2023, information gathered from parents was not shaping initial learning plans sharply enough. On a visit, ask how your child’s interests, abilities and routines would influence their first activities.
  • Outdoor access. The October 2023 findings called for better maintenance and access to outdoor materials. Look at how children can reach resources and continue activities independently.
  • Funding arrangements. Funded early education formed part of the October 2023 provision. Ask for the current funded attendance terms and a written quotation separating any additional hours, food and consumables.

The Verdict

Child 1st, Coleshill suits families who value practical independence and learning through hands-on activity. Its weekday opening window is also relevant to parents arranging care across the working day. The October 2023 picture contains useful substance: children choosing tools, building ramps and taking responsibility at mealtimes. The two improvement points deserve equal attention, because both affect how well an individual child can make use of that experience.
