Two private outdoor play areas give Harcourt Day Nursery a clear physical identity. Based on Harcourt Road in Harrogate, it combines that outdoor space with rooms named Babies, Tweenies, Caterpillars and Butterflies. It has capacity for 47 children aged 3 to 60 months.
Ofsted rated the nursery Good at its August 2022 inspection. That is a dated judgement, rather than a description of today's practice. The useful detail beneath it includes children learning to manage everyday tasks, play-based mathematics and close relationships with their key person, alongside two concrete areas needing attention.
Attendance choices include both daytime and extended-day bookings, plus morning and afternoon sessions. That gives families several ways to organise childcare rather than a single daily pattern.
Babies, Tweenies, Caterpillars and Butterflies provide the room names parents will encounter here. The whole-setting capacity of 47 is a total across the nursery, not a room size or a count of children attending together.
In August 2022, the physical activities included climbing steps to a slide, while babies played in a ball pool and used soft play. These gave children different ways to practise movement. The environment also included cosy dens, a soft-play room and spaces for role play, providing settings for quieter activity as well as physical play.
The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care. Here, its practical meaning can be seen in the August 2022 examples of children learning through play and building everyday independence: babies practised removing outdoor clothing, while older children helped themselves to food and poured drinks.
Mathematics in August 2022 was woven into practical activities. Children separated objects by colour using tweezers, counted their collections and compared pom-pom sizes. Handling and arranging objects made number, colour and size part of the same activity, rather than separate abstract tasks.
Songs with accompanying movements engaged younger children, and dough-table play gave children practice in taking turns with tools. Storytelling also featured, although preschool children sometimes began listening only after finishing lunch. Some children missed part of the story, which could affect their understanding of how stories are structured.
The two outdoor play areas are private and secure. They give outdoor play its own space within the nursery's offer. For parents weighing the indoor rooms alongside opportunities to be outside, this is a concrete feature to consider.
At its August 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities, making good progress. These findings belong to that visit.
During August 2022, key-person relationships were secure, with staff knowing children's needs and interests. Familiar routines helped children understand expectations, and practitioners used straightforward language and instructions to support early communication. The practical value was consistency: children had a familiar adult and understandable cues during the day.
Communication with parents in August 2022 combined an electronic app with direct conversations. Updates covered routines, activities and development, with suggestions for learning at home when needed. Staff support included supervision meetings and mentoring, giving practitioners opportunities to discuss concerns and develop their practice.
There was also a specific supervision weakness in August 2022. Toddlers could move into playrooms without staff realising while staff were attending to movement towards the sleep room. Improving communication about each toddler's whereabouts was therefore an explicit action, separate from the overall safeguarding judgement.
The address is 2 Harcourt Road, Harrogate, HG1 5NL. Daytime bookings run from 8am to 6pm, with an extended option from 7.30am to 6.30pm. Morning choices are 7.30am to 1pm or 8am to 1pm; afternoon choices are 1pm to 6.30pm or 1pm to 6pm.
The nursery opens Monday to Friday, operates throughout the year and closes on bank holidays. Extra days, additional hours and swaps are also offered. These are useful options for a family whose usual contracted pattern occasionally needs adjustment.
Funded childcare includes 15 hours free childcare per week for children aged 2, 3 and 4, subject to eligibility. Paid childcare is also offered. Monthly invoices depend on the contracted days a child could attend in that particular month, so the billing structure follows the calendar rather than an identical monthly attendance count.
Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. The schedule of fees sets out the booking windows and the basis for monthly invoicing. Parents can make an enquiry through the contact form, and show-round booking is offered.
Harcourt suits families seeking a choice between morning or afternoon sessions and daytime or extended-day care, with two private outdoor play areas adding practical appeal. Its August 2022 learning examples show everyday independence and hands-on activities rather than learning confined to group instruction.
The toddler-supervision and storytelling actions deserve direct attention when choosing this nursery. They are specific enough to support a useful conversation about present practice, while the Good judgement provides the dated inspection context.
