Nursery at Harrogate, Grove Road Community Primary School

Rhymes, storybooks and conversation through play give Grove Road’s nursery its character. This is the nursery class within Grove Road Community Primary School in Harrogate, with entry normally in the school year after a child’s third birthday. Children usually attend for three terms. When space permits, an earlier start is possible in the term after turning three.
The nursery has its own early years lead and lead practitioner within the wider EYFS team. For families, that means a nursery team within the primary school, while the move to Reception remains a separate admissions decision.
Listening comes before decoding. Nursery phonics begins with recognising everyday sounds, exploring rhythm and hearing rhyme. Daily Phase 1 teaching is adapted to children’s needs; towards the end of nursery, Phase 2 is introduced through 15-minute inputs. Monster Phonics is used across the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). These short teaching periods give children a structured introduction to sounds alongside their play.
Stories supply plenty of specific material. The nursery’s two-year text cycle includes Leaf Man, Dear Zoo and Jasper’s Beanstalk, with books able to change in response to children’s interests. The EYFS reading framework includes acting out familiar stories, using small-world play and making story maps. Children therefore have ways to explore a story beyond listening to an adult read it.
A nursery playhouse adds a concrete feature to the learning environment. In October 2023, adults in early years developed children’s vocabulary and learning during play, and the environment helped children make a positive start. The Jigsaw programme also brings feelings, friendships, being gentle and asking for help into nursery learning. Everyday relationships have a place alongside early reading.
Before a child starts, the family is invited to nursery for an informal conversation with the nursery leads. This gives parents and children an introduction to the team before taking up their sessions.
Additional support is coordinated by the school’s SENDCo, working with families, staff and external specialists. Parents can begin with the class teacher; support plans are reconsidered at least each term, and families receive the revised plans. Speech and Language Therapy and the Early Years Advisory Team are among the services the school can draw on. Support can begin before a diagnosis, so identifying a barrier to learning need not depend on completing that process first.
Hutchison Catering provides school meals, with advance payment through ParentPay. Children under five can receive free milk through Cool Milk when registered. That registration matters: milk is an arrangement families need to opt into.
Attending Grove Road Nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Every nursery family must make a separate Reception application through North Yorkshire Council, normally using an online parental preference form. For the September 2026 intake, the deadline was 15 January 2026; that cycle is now past.
Transition activities are separate from allocation. The programme begins in the summer term before September, with a welcome visit for parents and children and a short period in the child’s future classroom. A structured September induction follows. These steps introduce the next classroom and routines, rather than securing admission.
The funded pattern is 15 hours across five sessions each week, taken as five mornings or five afternoons. Additional sessions and stay-and-play lunch supervision carry charges; contact the school for current charges when arranging sessions.
Start an enquiry with the nursery notification form. In the term before the intended start, the school sends an application form and arranges the introductory conversation. A formal offer specifies the sessions, followed by the nursery admission form to accept them. General enquiries go to admin@groveroad.n-yorks.sch.uk or 01423 506060.
The school uniform combines a maroon cardigan or jumper with a white top and dark grey bottoms; the tie is optional. Pre-loved uniform is available through Friends of Grove Road and the Eco club, giving families another way to obtain school clothing.
