Kindercare

At a Glance

Sand marks for babies, pretend food for toddlers and body-organ play for older children give Kindercare in Ripon a recognisable picture of early learning. These were activities in July 2023, rather than a description of today's programme. The setting has capacity for 126 children at Kearsley Road, HG4 2RN.

At its July 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated Kindercare Good, judged safeguarding effective and found that carefully sequenced learning supported progress, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities. Outdoor learning and communication about learning at home were the two improvement priorities. Both matter to children's everyday experience.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2023, babies explored making marks in sand, toddlers used pretend food in imaginative play, and older children investigated the functions of organs through play with body parts. The activities gave different ages different ways into discovery.

The early years foundation stage sets expectations for children's learning, development and care: play, communication and physical exploration form part of that learning. In July 2023, songs, action rhymes and chanting supported language, while older children practised listening and taking turns during yoga. Staff also helped babies develop movement and strength.

Outdoor areas provided fresh air, exercise and resources in July 2023. However, the learning opportunities were less stimulating than those indoors, and adult-directed activities restricted scope for children to invent their own play. The improvement priority was richer outdoor experiences, including opportunities to develop movement and coordination.

Care and Support

In July 2023, key-person relationships gave children a familiar adult to return to for encouragement. Staff knew their children's next learning steps. Moves between rooms were gradual, and staff worked with professionals and receiving schools around transitions.

Deep breathing helped children manage difficult emotions in July 2023. Handwashing before meals and after outdoor play reinforced hygiene, while mealtime tasks gave children practice in doing things for themselves.

Daily conversations, notice boards and online contact kept parents informed in July 2023. The weakness was consistency: some families did not regularly receive guidance on extending learning at home. Contact with staff and useful learning advice are different things; families should weigh both.

Following an injury requiring medical treatment, notified to Ofsted in February 2024, the nursery bought sturdier furniture. In February 2026, Ofsted again identified safety shortcomings and recorded corrective action: more effective risk assessments, stronger checks of the environment and resources, and better staff deployment during busy periods. These were repeated safety issues, with action recorded to put matters right.

Practical Information

Kindercare's address is Kearsley Road, Ripon, HG4 2RN. In July 2023, children attending ranged from birth to 10 years; that was the age range at the visit.

At that time, the nursery operated throughout the year, Monday to Friday, with session times from 8am until 6pm. It also provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. These attendance and funding details describe July 2023 arrangements.

Things to Consider

  • Outdoor learning. July 2023 improvements centred on richer outdoor play and more child-directed exploration. On a visit, ask how children now choose and develop their outdoor activities.
  • Learning beyond nursery. Some parents received inconsistent guidance in July 2023. Ask how the key person now shares next steps and practical ideas for home.
  • Attendance fit. The July 2023 session window was 8am until 6pm. What attendance patterns and funded-hours arrangements would apply to your child now?
  • Safety checks. Equipment and environmental safety issues recurred in 2024 and February 2026, when corrective action included better risk assessments and staff deployment. Ask how these checks and busy-period staffing work now.

The Verdict

Kindercare merits consideration for families who value play-based learning, familiar key-person relationships and practical independence. Its July 2023 picture combined imaginative activities with routines for communication, emotions and self-care. The decision should give equal weight to how outdoor learning and parent guidance have developed: those were the clear weaknesses alongside the Good judgement.
