Music with sign language, sport and imaginative yoga give Bear & Bunny Meadvale a recognisable character. Its natural materials and rooms with easy access outdoors support a day built around children choosing activities, with messy play alongside quieter exploration. This is a preschool setting at 8 Copse Road in Redhill, with capacity for 20 children aged two to five.
Ofsted rated the setting Good on 16 July 2025 and found safeguarding effective. The inspection was published under its earlier name, Kiwi's Playgroup and Pre-School. It provides useful context, while the current offer includes Musical Hands and other additional lessons at no extra charge.
Flexible preschool attendance is offered. The practical timetable needs attention before families make a booking, because the opening windows conflict.
The early years foundation stage is the required framework for learning, development and care: for parents, that means play and everyday routines carry learning as well as opportunities to practise independence. Meadvale's current approach gives children choices between imaginative activities, crafts, outdoor exploration and quieter play. Natural materials are part of the indoor environment, and access to outdoor learning areas connects the two parts of the day.
Musical Hands brings together signing, music, dance and movement. Sports Variety Sessions introduces activities including cricket, football, basketball and dance, giving children different ways to be active rather than concentrating on one sport. Yoga Adventures combines imaginative journeys with movement and mindfulness. These additional sessions are included at no extra cost; they add different ways for children to participate alongside their chosen play. The learning programme explains these activities.
In July 2025, learning was built into small, concrete encounters. Children explored language through miniature-world play and experimented with the distances toy cars travelled. An animal hide-and-seek game introduced counting and words describing position. At a pretend petrol station, adults added vocabulary that helped children develop their play. These examples matter because the learning came through something children were already interested in, rather than being detached from their activity.
Revisiting activities was also part of the July 2025 day. Children had opportunities to return to an idea and build familiarity, while mathematics appeared both in group activities and in ordinary routines. The practical question for parents is how adults extend an individual child's interests while keeping the child involved in the play.
Outdoor learning is part of the current daily routine, with opportunities to explore nature, move and tackle problems. The free-flow approach gives children choices about their activity, including outdoor exploration. For a child who likes active play, this makes outdoor time part of the learning offer rather than simply a pause between indoor activities.
Messy play also has a place. Alongside crafts and imaginative play, it gives children another route into making and exploring. The quieter choices matter too: the approach accommodates children who want a less energetic activity as well as those drawn to movement.
In July 2025, Ofsted found that the key-person arrangements worked effectively, support involving families and outside agencies helped children with additional needs make good progress, and staff responded sensitively to children who were upset. Adults knew their key children and shared individual learning goals with parents and colleagues. For families, the useful combination was a familiar adult and information that could be carried between home and the setting.
Predictability was part of care in July 2025. Staff gave advance warning when play was approaching its end, helping children understand the next part of the routine. Behaviour expectations were discussed together and reinforced during the day, with older children sometimes helping younger children tidy. These were practical ways of making expectations understandable.
Self-care was similarly concrete in July 2025: children poured milk, put away their own artwork and cleaned their hands after painting. Toothbrushing demonstrations, discussions about sun safety and support with toilet training connected care with preparation for school. The emphasis was on children practising manageable tasks themselves.
There were two important weaknesses in July 2025. Children's family backgrounds and traditions were not sufficiently reflected in everyday activities, limiting opportunities to share their own experiences and learn about others. Monitoring of staff practice also failed to address some inconsistencies promptly, so teaching was not consistently of the same quality. Both points deserve attention alongside the positive findings.
The address is 8 Copse Road, Meadvale, Redhill, Surrey RH1 6NW. Flexible preschool attendance allows families to submit their preferred starting date and required days through an enquiry form. This is useful for setting out an intended pattern from the outset.
The attendance offer gives an opening window of 8.30am to 3pm. Opening hours and the annual calendar require clarification because other opening windows differ, as set out below. An enquiry can be made by telephone on 01737 486070. A parent pack can also be requested.
Funded childcare is offered, including Funded 30 hours for 3/4 years and Funded 15 hours for 2 years. Participation in those entitlements should not be read as a guarantee that an individual family qualifies or can secure its preferred attendance pattern.
Musical Hands, Sports Variety Sessions and Yoga Adventures carry no extra charge. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. Families comparing the overall cost should consider their intended days alongside the funded entitlement they can use.
Bear & Bunny Meadvale suits families seeking flexible preschool attendance and a day with choices between creative play, outdoor activity and named movement sessions. Musical Hands gives signing a place alongside music; Sports Variety Sessions and Yoga Adventures add other ways to take part.
The July 2025 picture combined useful everyday independence and individual support with weaknesses in teaching consistency and cultural representation. The current activity offer has clear appeal. The timetable conflict and those improvement points are the decisive matters to resolve before choosing it.
