Fenwood House Day Nursery, Swinton

At a Glance

A triple-height glass atrium and a garden with tractor tyres give Fenwood House Day Nursery, Swinton a recognisable character. Based within the grounds of Swinton Academy, it combines separate spaces for different ages with outdoor surfaces and equipment that make movement a substantial part of the setting. The physical offer is a reason to look closely here.

At its 20 June 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged safeguarding effective. The practical scale is 73 places in total, with children accepted from 1 to 60 months of age. That whole-setting capacity should not be read as the number of children sharing any one room.

Morning, afternoon and full-day sessions give families different attendance patterns. The important balance is between the generous physical spaces and the areas for improvement identified in June 2025: older children's independence, time to answer questions and more consistent staff development.

The Nursery Experience

Rooms and Ages

Age separation shapes the layout. There is a space for children below two, another for two-year-olds and another for children aged three onwards; the room labels are Baby Room, Toddler Room and Pre-School Room. Resources and surroundings are arranged for the children using each space, rather than treating babies and preschool children as one group.

Two large indoor rooms sit alongside the glass atrium, with separate natural and soft-surface outdoor areas. This combination gives the setting more than one kind of play environment. The atrium is a concrete point of difference, while the age divisions matter for families comparing how their child will move through nursery.

Learning and Activities

The nursery follows the early years foundation stage, the framework for children's learning, development and care. In parent language, its educational work includes learning to communicate, use the body, understand shapes and manage feelings through everyday play and interactions. It is the shared foundation for early-years provision, rather than a special programme unique to Fenwood.

In June 2025, babies explored shopping-bag role play while adults introduced words for food and shopping. Flap books prompted shared attention to pictures. These are useful examples of how language can grow out of an activity a baby already finds interesting, rather than being taught separately from play.

Other June 2025 activities connected a sea-animal theme across ages. Babies encountered animal words through songs and props, toddlers matched pictures in a sensory tray, and older children cut and assembled animal models. The different tasks put emphasis on vocabulary, matching and hand control at different stages.

Shape sorters and inset puzzles also featured in June 2025. Adults encouraged children to keep trying as they turned pieces and worked out where they belonged. For parents, this gives a more concrete picture of early mathematics than a broad claim about number learning: shape, size and solving a small practical problem were part of the activity.

Outdoor and Community Life

The garden combines planting areas and bark pits with artificial grass, sheltered canopies and soft-play surfaces. Large tractor tyres and the towering adventure frame and slide add more substantial physical equipment. Different textures and structures give children different ways to explore and move, while the canopies provide sheltered outdoor space.

In June 2025, children practised climbing steps, balancing along beams and using a slide. Adults also helped them use a see-saw, and movement games involved copying animals. The examples show both equipment-based activity and imaginative movement, rather than outdoor time being limited to running around.

Care and Support

Relationships and Communication

In June 2025, children turned to their key person when they needed help, and adults used physical reassurance when children needed calming. Staff supported children with their emotions and joined their play. For a parent choosing care for a young child, the important detail is that comfort came through a familiar adult relationship.

Communication with home also had a practical purpose in June 2025. Staff shared ways of responding to children's behaviour with parents, and transition plans passed information on to schools. That creates continuity around a child's needs rather than making home, nursery and the next setting separate conversations.

Inclusion and Wellbeing

At the June 2025 inspection, Ofsted found that support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities used observations, referrals, individual support plans and targeted help to promote progress. These mechanisms matter more than a general promise of inclusion: they describe how a need was recognised, how further help was arranged and how development was followed.

Mealtimes also carried learning opportunities in June 2025. Babies tried finger foods and younger children learnt to use beakers. Older children, however, had too few chances to manage tasks themselves because adults prepared the table, poured drinks and served food; greater independence was an improvement priority.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas holidays. Morning sessions run from 8am to 1pm, afternoons from 1pm to 6pm, and full days from 8am to 6pm. The shorter sessions offer a different pattern from staying for the whole opening day.

The Swinton enquiry form requires an email verification step before staff can respond about a place. Families can also contact the branch by email at swinton@fenwoodnursery.co.uk. Completing that verification is a practical part of making the enquiry reach its next stage.

Getting There

The address is Piccadilly Road, Swinton, Mexborough, S64 8LF. A large private car park is accessible through the Piccadilly Road entrance, giving families an on-site parking option.

The nursery occupies grounds belonging to Swinton Academy. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place; families still need to follow the local authority admissions process for a state-school place.

Funding and Paid Extras

Government-funded childcare is offered. The branch's charging structure includes a stretched-funding top-up, so funded hours and the final childcare bill need to be considered separately. Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation.

Breakfast and morning snacks, lunch with dessert, and afternoon snacks with light tea are separately priced food items. Personal care items and sports activities are included in the fees, and there is no deposit or registration charge; late collection attracts a separate charge, and an overdue-invoice charge applies when payment is seven days late. This distinction helps families compare the childcare charge with food costs and charges triggered by collection or payment timing.

Things to Consider

  • Independence before school. In June 2025, adults handled mealtime tasks that older children could have practised themselves. On a visit, ask how children now help with serving, pouring and preparing the table.
  • Time to talk. In June 2025, questioning sometimes moved on before children had enough time to think and answer. Ask how practitioners build pauses into conversations so children can contribute at their own pace.
  • Staff development. In June 2025, informal support and online learning were in place, but appraisals were inconsistent. More structured supervision and appraisal were improvement priorities, relevant to how individual practice develops.
  • School-site expectations. Sharing Swinton Academy's grounds does not secure a school place. Treat the nursery choice and the later school application as separate decisions.

The Verdict

Fenwood House Day Nursery, Swinton suits families wanting either morning or afternoon sessions as well as full-day care, with substantial outdoor equipment and separate age spaces. The atrium, planted areas and adventure frame give the environment clear character.

The June 2025 findings also make the choice more specific: familiar adult relationships and practical SEND support sit alongside questions about independence, conversational pace and staff appraisal. Families approaching the move to school should give those improvement priorities as much attention as the garden and rooms.
