Books shared between children and conversation with adults give Brookfield’s early years provision its character. In September 2022, children were eager to learn, communicated successfully and chose to look at books together. Language mattered here.
The nursery belongs to Brookfield Primary Academy on Lime Grove in Mexborough, where children can join from age 3. Its class is called Butterflies (FS1). Ofsted graded the school’s early years provision Good following the inspection on 15 and 16 September 2022; that judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately inspected nursery.
Communication is a clear curriculum priority. In September 2022, early years planning gave language development substantial attention, and children could converse with adults and one another. Classroom activities developed early writing, number skills and reading. Alongside these planned tasks, children independently shared books, giving them opportunities to enjoy stories with their peers.
The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) brings learning and development together with children’s health and safety. Its seven areas span language, physical development and emotional and social development, alongside literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and creative expression. For parents, that means early education involves more than learning letters and numbers.
Art provides a concrete example of how Foundation learning works at Brookfield. Children practise using scissors and paintbrushes through focused activities, with materials accessible across the day. They are encouraged to describe their methods and use the vocabulary associated with them. Making something becomes an opportunity to practise handling tools and explaining ideas, linking creative work with the emphasis on communication.
Settling involved practical help with familiar routines in September 2022. Children adjusted successfully, with adults helping them learn how the day worked. Early years children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) also received effective support from adults who understood their individual requirements.
The school aims to identify additional needs early and work with families in decisions about support. Its team includes a SENDCo and an Inclusion Manager, giving parents roles to approach about concerns. School communication arrangements described in December 2024 used ParentPay emails as the main channel, with text messages for brief updates. Parents could also arrange conversations with class teachers between parents’ evenings.
Food is part of the practical care picture. In May 2023, fresh fruit and milk were provided free at break time for EYFS children. This gave the youngest children a snack within their school day.
Attending Brookfield’s nursery does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate Reception application through the normal admissions process. Applications go through the local authority using its Common Application Form, with Rotherham providing the starting-primary-school route. Treat this as a separate decision when planning your child’s next step.
Contact the school office on 01709 570727 or email info@brookfieldjunioracademy.org for enquiries. School tours can be arranged by appointment through the office, offering families a way to explore the setting before choosing it.
For discussions about additional needs, approach the Inclusion Manager or SENDCo. Bringing your child’s needs into that conversation gives the team relevant information for planning support.
