United Kids Childcare Hateley

At a Glance

In July 2022, worm hunts, early conversations and learning to serve food illustrated United Kids Childcare Hateley's practical learning through ordinary play and care. At its July 2022 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall. The strongest examples involved children doing things for themselves, from babies practising feeding to older children managing personal care.

Based at Hateley Heath Primary & Childrens Centre on Huntingdon Road in West Bromwich, the nursery accepts children aged 3 to 60 months and has 70 places in total. That whole-setting capacity is separate from the number of children sharing an activity or attending on a particular day.

The July 2022 account also carried two useful cautions. Mixed-age activities needed better adjustment to children's different abilities, and the impact of staff training needed closer evaluation. These matter alongside the positive examples: a pleasant activity still needs to stretch the child taking part.

The Nursery Experience

In July 2022, learning followed children's interests and what they needed to master next. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for learning, development and care, connecting play with skills such as communication, movement and early mathematics. Here, the dated examples make that connection tangible rather than abstract.

The garden supplied an especially clear illustration. Children dug for worms and compared their sizes, bringing mathematical thinking into outdoor exploration. Wheeled toys exercised their legs, while chasing bubbles involved bending and movement. Babies practised standing and moving around furniture and toys. These were different routes into physical development, suited to different stages.

In July 2022, language learning included exchanges with staff and shared stories. In July 2022, staff responded enthusiastically to babies' sounds; two-year-olds revisited favourite stories and repeated familiar expressions; older children asked questions and contributed their ideas. For parents, those examples distinguish early communication from simply hearing adults talk: children had opportunities to respond and take part.

Counting, number recognition and shapes also appeared across the nursery's activities. Staff observed children during play and everyday routines, then used those observations to plan further experiences. The limitation was in group work. Some older children needed greater challenge, while some younger children encountered activities that did not fit their learning needs. Individual planning and successful group teaching are separate strengths, and the latter needed attention.

Care and Support

At its July 2022 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and children with special educational needs and/or disabilities well supported through work with external professionals, with children making good progress from their starting points. This is a dated judgement about care and support, rather than a promise about each child's experience today.

Everyday relationships had concrete expression in July 2022. Babies sought comfort from staff, and children practised consideration for one another, including offering more fruit to another child at snack time. Adults encouraged sharing, turn-taking and polite exchanges. Such small interactions matter because they give children repeated opportunities to practise living alongside others.

Independence was built into care routines. Older children poured drinks and served food, while babies worked on feeding themselves. Handwashing before eating connected personal hygiene with a familiar daily event. Children also learnt about exercise, healthy eating and dental care, and families received guidance on accessing dental provision.

Communication with families was another part of the July 2022 picture. Staff offered ideas for extending learning at home, and parents' suggestions contributed to plans for more outings into the surrounding community. This gave families a way to influence nursery life as well as hear about it. Those plans should be read as plans at that time, rather than a current outings schedule.

In July 2022, the nursery provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That describes the offer at the inspection date. Current prices should come in the nursery's written quotation.

The setting occupies premises at a primary school and children's centre. Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place; families still use the local authority admissions process for a state-school application. Childcare arrangements and a school-place decision need to be considered separately.

Things to Consider

  • Mixed-age learning. In July 2022, some group activities gave older children too little challenge and did not consistently match younger children's needs. On a visit, ask how staff adjust the same activity for children at different stages.
  • Training that changes practice. The July 2022 improvement priorities included evaluating whether professional development benefited children's learning. Ask for an example of how recent training has changed an activity or care routine.
  • Your attendance and costs. The opening window runs from 8am to 6pm on weekdays. Before choosing a pattern, ask which sessions you can book and how funded hours, meals and consumables would be treated in your written quotation.

The Verdict

United Kids Childcare Hateley suits families who value practical independence, conversation and learning through everyday play. Its July 2022 examples are persuasive because they show children actively doing things: comparing worms, pouring drinks and contributing ideas.

The decision rests partly on how that approach works in groups today. The dated concerns about challenge and staff development deserve specific answers, alongside an attendance arrangement that fits the family's week. The weekday opening window and school-site setting provide useful practical anchors for that discussion.
