Chopsticks at snack time, musical instruments for babies and a daily turn helping with the dishes give Explorers Lydiate a practical, hands-on character. At its 28 November 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good and judged its safeguarding arrangements effective. The detail matters more than the label: everyday routines were used to develop independence, communication and the hand control children need for writing.
At 5 Moss Lane in Lydiate, Liverpool, L31 4DB, the nursery accepts children from 3 months to 5 years and has capacity for 48 children. Child-led learning shapes the current approach, with activities built around children's creativity and individual interests. Its inspection also identified two important priorities: making group activities work for younger children and improving consistency in support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).
The Early Years Foundation Stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care. In practical terms, that means learning through play and everyday experiences, with adults helping children develop communication, physical skills and independence. It is the foundation of provision, rather than an extra programme.
In November 2024, learning was planned to revisit skills and build on earlier experiences. Babies copied adults shaking instruments and joined songs with sounds and movements. Toddlers investigated ice that had formed in an outdoor tuff tray. These were different experiences for different stages: imitation for the youngest children, and direct exploration of a change in the weather for toddlers.
Preschool children practised making marks on paper and in sand in November 2024, while handling chopsticks at snack time added another opportunity to exercise their fingers. Writing preparation extended beyond a pencil. The emphasis was on manipulating objects and gaining control through activities children could take part in themselves.
Makaton is a group-wide curriculum addition introduced to develop early communication skills. Alongside this, the current child-led approach gives children's interests a role in what they explore, rather than treating every child as ready for the same activity.
The outdoor tuff tray provided a concrete learning opportunity in November 2024: staff used the frozen ice to encourage children's curiosity. The weather became something to investigate. This is a useful example of how ordinary surroundings can supply material for learning, rather than outdoor time serving only as a break from indoor activities.
School preparation also took a practical form in November 2024. The helper of the day board allocated children tasks such as preparing the table, tidying and washing dishes. Responsibility was attached to real jobs. For families thinking ahead to school, these experiences show how independence was practised within the nursery day.
In November 2024, children settled readily with support from caring staff. Behaviour routines included listening, sitting appropriately and treating others kindly, with children choosing a daily behaviour promise. Expectations were made concrete through actions children could understand.
Communication with families in November 2024 combined an app, parents evenings and termly reports. These offered different ways to follow children's learning: ongoing updates alongside opportunities for discussion and a written account of development. Parents' comments also contributed to activities and strategies within the setting.
At the November 2024 inspection, Ofsted found that children with SEND had individual support plans, but inconsistent staff interventions sometimes limited their progress; it also identified whole-group activities in which younger children lost interest and disrupted others' learning. Those findings deserve weight alongside the Good judgement. A plan alone does not establish that support is consistently effective.
Daily supervised tooth brushing formed part of the November 2024 routine, alongside meals and snacks that promoted healthy eating. Oral health was therefore addressed through a repeated activity children could practise, rather than through advice alone.
The nursery operates Monday to Friday and closes at 6pm. It opens throughout the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas. That calendar is relevant for families whose childcare needs continue beyond school terms.

In November 2024, the nursery received government funding. For budgeting, current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. Families should assess the complete attendance arrangement rather than treating the inspection-era funding statement as a promise about their own booking.
Explorers Lydiate suits families seeking a year-round weekday nursery with a child-led approach and practical preparation for school. Its November 2024 day included music, outdoor investigation and useful responsibilities, while communication gave parents several ways to follow development. The Good judgement provides a clear inspection position. The decision still needs to give proper weight to the findings about group activities and consistent SEND support, especially for a child who needs carefully tailored participation.
Ofsted rated it Good on 28 November 2024 and judged safeguarding effective. Improvement priorities concerned whole-group activities and consistency in interventions, especially for children with SEND.
It accepts children from 3 months to 5 years and has capacity for 48 children in total.
The nursery uses child-led learning alongside the Early Years Foundation Stage, which provides the framework for learning through play and everyday experiences. Makaton is a group-wide addition intended to develop early communication skills.
The nursery received government funding at its November 2024 inspection. This is a dated funding position, rather than a guarantee of a funded booking for an individual child.
