Kids Planet Ainsdale

At a Glance

Beach walks and pinewood adventures give Kids Planet Ainsdale a recognisable character. Children collect shells at Ainsdale beach and make dens on regular trips to Formby Pinewoods, while their indoor base is a detached house with plenty of daylight. For families who want nature to be part of nursery life, these are concrete attractions.

At its November 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall, judged its education good and found safeguarding effective. Two improvements were required: better settling arrangements for babies and toddler mealtimes that did more to develop social skills. Those practical concerns deserve attention alongside the positive judgement.

The nursery accepts children aged 3 to 59 months at 3 Shore Road, Southport. Full-day, morning and afternoon bookings give families different ways to use the setting.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: play, conversation and everyday experiences contribute to learning rather than sitting apart from it. Ainsdale's outdoor approach adds a clear local dimension. Its Udeskole accreditation concerns learning in nature, with activities both within the nursery grounds and further afield.

Barefoot Beach Days bring children to Ainsdale beach regularly for walks, wildlife spotting and shell collecting. These experiences offer things to examine, describe and explore through movement. The beach is part of the children's learning environment, rather than simply a nearby landmark.

Outdoor Learning Adventures extend that approach to Formby Pinewoods. Regular visits include working with clay, constructing dens and making hammocks. For a parent choosing between settings, the useful distinction is the combination of outdoor space at nursery and repeated experiences in a named local woodland. The activities give children materials to handle and projects to attempt together.

Inside, the detached property provides a light-filled base for play. That physical setting complements the outdoor offer: children have an indoor environment as well as experiences in the garden, woodland and coastal surroundings.

In November 2023, toddlers explored citrus fruit and pomegranates during pretend cooking, with staff using the fruit's smell to prompt conversation. Everyday objects made the activity tangible. Wood and metal resources also gave children opportunities to test their ideas.

During the same period, babies made music with instruments and moved their bodies as they played. Stories, rhymes and access to books ran through the nursery's activities. Talent shows gave children a way to share individual abilities; the value here was the chance to participate and express themselves, rather than a formal performance programme.

These indoor examples belong to November 2023. They provide a useful picture of the nursery's practice at that point, while the beach and pinewood activities form its current outdoor offer.

Care and Support

Famly, the group-wide parent app used here, provides updates during the day. For parents spending working hours away from their child, that gives a practical connection with nursery life. It sits alongside a more hands-on form of family support documented in November 2023: small bags to take home containing guidance about sleep safety, toilet training and dental health.

At the November 2023 inspection, Ofsted found that the special educational needs coordinator used advice from outside agencies effectively to guide staff, and that children with SEND learned successfully. This was a specific support mechanism, with professional advice informing children's learning, rather than a general promise of inclusion.

In November 2023, staff helped toddlers recognise emotions and use considerate behaviour, including helping a friend with clothing before outdoor play. Staff also received coaching and training about the curriculum and children's learning. These examples show how adult support and everyday interactions were organised at that time.

Settling was less consistent. In November 2023, arrangements for new babies needed more careful planning, and some babies struggled to settle. Toddler teatime also involved waits that were too long for some children, reducing opportunities to practise social skills. Both issues concern ordinary routines that can have a substantial effect on a young child's day.

Fresh meals and snacks cater for dietary needs. On privately paid days, food and care supplies are included in the fee; days using early years funding have a different charge structure, explained below.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across 52 weeks of the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas. Bookings include Full Day from 8am to 6pm, Morning from 8am to 1pm and Afternoon from 1pm to 6pm. A Full Time option uses the same daily hours, and an hourly charge supports ad hoc care.

The morning and afternoon patterns matter for families arranging shorter attendance around work or other commitments. They are actual booking choices, separate from the nursery's overall opening window. Full-day attendance provides the longer alternative.

The address is 3 Shore Road, Ainsdale, Southport, PR8 2RF. Enquiries can be made directly by telephone or email, and tours can be booked.

Funding and Paid Extras

Funded childcare and privately paid care are both offered. For private care, fees include meals, snacks, sun cream, wipes, nappies and formula, alongside sports activities and the parent app. That combines food and everyday care supplies within the private fee.

On days when early years funding is applied, meals, consumables and activities are charged separately. The additional-charge bands depend on the amount of funded time used that day. Families comparing funded and private attendance therefore need to distinguish the childcare hours from those separate categories, rather than assuming the private fee's inclusions apply unchanged to funded days.

Current prices come in the nursery's written quotation. The useful comparison is the total for the intended attendance pattern, including paid hours and the charges attached to funded days.

Things to Consider

  • A baby's start. Settling arrangements needed strengthening in November 2023. During a tour, ask how sessions are adapted to your baby's responses and how familiar care routines are carried into nursery.
  • Toddler teatime. Long waits affected social learning in November 2023. Ask how food is served now and what staff do with children during the transition to eating.
  • Outdoor participation. Barefoot Beach Days and regular Formby Pinewoods trips are central attractions. Discuss how your child's age and needs shape participation and what clothing the outings require.
  • The funded-day bill. Meals, consumables and activities attract separate charges on days using funding. Request a written quotation for your chosen morning, afternoon or full-day pattern so these categories are clear.

The Verdict

Kids Planet Ainsdale suits families seeking morning or afternoon sessions as well as full-day care, with regular experiences beyond the nursery grounds. Ainsdale beach and Formby Pinewoods give its outdoor learning a strong sense of place.

The November 2023 Good judgement provides a positive inspection position, balanced by specific concerns about baby settling and toddler mealtimes. Those routines, together with the funded-day charge structure, are the most useful points to explore before choosing it.
