Nursery at Kings Meadow Primary School and Early Years Education Centre

Last reviewed: October 2026 · Inspection data and key information above update regularly, however, this review below is refreshed bi-annually and may not reflect recent changes. Contact the nursery directly to confirm current arrangements. If you spot anything outdated or inaccurate, please let us know.

At a Glance

Conversation, turn-taking and learning to manage a classroom routine give Kings Meadow’s nursery its character. These everyday skills receive deliberate attention, helping children join in with other children and understand what happens next.

Acorns caters for children aged three to four, with capacity for 36 children in the nursery policy reviewed in May 2025. It sits within Kings Meadow Primary School and Early Years Education Centre. Families considering an earlier start should distinguish Acorns from Seedlings: the two-year-old provision on the school site is operated by First Steps Enterprises.

Ofsted judged the school’s early years provision Outstanding at the inspection on 16 and 17 July 2024. That judgement covers early years within the school, rather than a separately graded nursery.

The Nursery Day

Language develops through interaction here. In July 2024, nursery staff helped children converse with one another, share turns and understand instructions. Their teaching of classroom routines was exceptionally effective. For a young child, learning how to take part is a substantial part of learning itself.

Reading begins in Nursery. Alongside this, the early years guidance for Talk for Writing proposes daily imaginative storytelling and acting out stories, with adults leading the creation of a shared class story at least once a week. The emphasis is on children inventing and telling stories before independent written work.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes expressing ideas and feelings through art, music, movement and role-play. Acorns requests information about a child’s EYFS progress from their previous setting and assesses them on entry, so planning can start with the child’s existing skills. Parents also contribute to curriculum consultation groups, giving families a role in shaping learning.

The July 2024 school-wide improvement action concerned assessment in a few subjects, where gaps in knowledge could remain unaddressed. It was not identified as a nursery-specific weakness.

Care and Support

Settling can happen in small steps. The May 2025 nursery policy allows attendance to increase over days or weeks, with a parent staying initially or an earlier collection where that helps the child. Families can therefore prepare for an introduction suited to their child rather than assume full sessions from the outset.

A home visit forms part of Acorns’ initial assessment. Staff gather parents’ knowledge of their child and identify individual needs early. In July 2024, staff’s close knowledge of children and families supported positive relationships that helped children feel secure.

For additional needs, the school’s SEND arrangements involve parents in agreeing support and reviewing progress each term. The school environment includes accessible toilets and wheelchair access. These are practical starting points for discussing a child’s support with the teaching team and SENDCo.

Full-day children bring a packed lunch or have a charged school meal. Families receiving qualifying benefits can apply to the local authority for free meals.

Moving On to Reception

Nursery attendance does not guarantee a Reception place. Families must make a separate application through Sefton Local Authority, following its procedures at the appropriate time.

The school admission policy reviewed in May 2025 gives no priority for nursery attendance. After children whose EHCP names the school, its oversubscription criteria concern care status, siblings and distance. Choosing Acorns should therefore be a decision about the nursery experience itself.

For children with SEND, transition support includes meetings with parents and sharing information about needs and support strategies. This continuity of care is separate from the allocation of a school place.

Practical Information

Morning sessions run from 8.45am to 11.45am; afternoons are 12.15pm to 3.15pm. The full-day session is 9am to 3pm. For the 15-hour pattern, families can choose mornings, afternoons, or grouped attendance: Monday and Tuesday plus Wednesday morning, or Wednesday afternoon plus Thursday and Friday.

The May 2025 policy provides for up to 15 funded hours per week, increasing to 30 for eligible children, over up to 38 weeks annually. Attendance beyond the funded allocation is charged. Breakfast club and after-school care are also offered to children over three, with charges and availability conditions applying. Contact the administration team about session availability and the school for current charges.
