Rainbow Rays Nursery

At a Glance

In February 2023, babies explored spaghetti and preschool conversations followed an interest in the solar system, giving Rainbow Rays Nursery's learning a concrete, playful character. At its February 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged the nursery Good and found safeguarding effective, with attentive care and purposeful learning alongside two areas for improvement in language support.

Based at Clough Bank House on Edmund Road in Sheffield, the nursery has capacity for 40 children aged six months to five years. The practical opening window is 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday.

The Nursery Experience

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play and everyday interaction serve an educational purpose as well as meeting children's needs. In February 2023, activities connected physical exploration, conversation and children's interests rather than treating learning as a separate exercise.

Babies practised hand control by handling spaghetti and transferring sand between containers. Toddlers used chunky drawing tools and experimented with colour by combining paints. These were tangible ways to explore materials while developing movement and coordination.

The Hungry Caterpillar supplied a healthy-eating activity in February 2023, with toddlers choosing fruit for the story's caterpillar. Chinese New Year prompted preschool children to recall the celebration and discuss its animals. Cultural and religious activities drew on the backgrounds of children attending, giving those experiences a connection to the group.

Preschool conversations also followed children's interests. A cornflour mark-making activity led into discussion of the solar system, heat and freezing. Younger children's vocabulary needed more consistent attention, however: staff did not reliably encourage babies and toddlers to say or repeat words.

Care and Support

In February 2023, children had a key person and turned to familiar adults for comfort. Parents received feedback on everyday care and development. Those relationships gave families a point of connection with the nursery and children an adult they knew.

Staff also helped children work through disagreements. When sharing became difficult, a child was encouraged to request a turn after another child had finished. Waiting and turn-taking were practised through ordinary play.

Support for children learning English as an additional language was uneven in February 2023. Opportunities to use their home languages depended too heavily on multilingual staff. At the same inspection, Ofsted asked for more consistent vocabulary encouragement for under-threes and more opportunities for children to use their home languages.

Practical Information

Rainbow Rays Nursery is at Clough Bank House, Edmund Road, Sheffield, S2 4EL. It opens throughout the year, with closures for bank holidays and Christmas; weekday opening hours are 8am to 6pm.

In February 2023, the nursery offered funded early education for children aged two, three and four. That is a dated funding position, rather than a promise of eligibility or a funded place.

Things to Consider

  • Language for younger children. Vocabulary encouragement for babies and toddlers was an improvement priority in February 2023. During a visit, ask how practitioners now build repetition and new words into play.
  • Home-language support. February 2023 practice relied too heavily on multilingual staff. Families using another language at home should discuss how their child's language will feature across the day.
  • Attendance and costs. The weekday opening window runs from 8am to 6pm. Ask which booking pattern, funding arrangements and written quotation would apply to your family.

The Verdict

Rainbow Rays Nursery suits families who need care from babyhood through the preschool years and weekday opening hours from 8am to 6pm. Its February 2023 picture combines familiar-adult relationships and interest-led activities with clear language-development priorities. Those priorities deserve close attention when choosing care for a younger child or a child using another language at home.
