Sheffield Children's Centre

At a Glance

Signing babies, adventurous outdoor play and practical help for parents give Sheffield Children's Centre a clear character: at its January 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated it Outstanding and found safeguarding effective. The emphasis extended beyond the children's day to support for family life.

Based at 101 Shoreham Street, Sheffield, S1 4SR, the centre accepts children from birth to five. Its January 2025 activities combined communication, physical challenges and resources that parents could use at home.

The Nursery Experience

In January 2025, the early years foundation stage took shape through children's choices in play, conversations that introduced new words, reading and physical activity. These experiences connected learning with things children could do, say and explore. Staff supported home languages and paired speech with signing; babies joined sing and sign, copying movements and experimenting with sounds.

Books supplied starting points for learning about creatures and feelings. In January 2025, families borrowed story bags and books to continue this at home, including resources for toilet training and communication. That made reading a practical link between nursery and family life.

Outdoor activity had substance. In January 2025, children tackled unstable bridges and a firefighters' pole, practised with hula hoops and judged risks while climbing and sliding. These gave them opportunities to practise balance and strength. Further garden development was underway, intended to extend resources for children who preferred learning outside.

Care and Support

At the January 2025 inspection, Ofsted found rapid progress, including for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), and carefully planned transitions that helped children settle and build relationships. This gave families a positive dated judgement on both learning and adjustment to nursery life.

In January 2025, staff responded patiently when children struggled with feelings or behaviour. Parents also received help from occupational therapists through sensory diet training, intended to support children who found sensory information difficult to process. The practical value was support that parents could carry into home life.

Family support in January 2025 included a food and clothing bank and help communicating with other professionals. A dentist visited regularly as part of work with parents on oral health. Leaders also recognised that some practitioners needed help to extend children's learning and had a targeted development plan for staff.

Practical Information

The centre opens Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, throughout the year, closing on Bank Holidays. The Shoreham Street address places care in Sheffield, with an attendance calendar extending beyond school terms.

In January 2025, the centre provided funded early education for children aged two, three and four. This is a dated account of its funding provision.

Things to Consider

  • Outdoor learning. Garden development was underway in January 2025. On a visit, ask how that work has shaped children's access to outdoor resources.
  • Staff development. In January 2025, leaders had identified practitioners who needed further curriculum support. Ask how the development plan now helps staff extend children's learning.

The Verdict

Sheffield Children's Centre suits families seeking care across the year who value communication, physical play and practical parent support. Its January 2025 strengths were tangible: signing with babies, challenging outdoor equipment and resources families could take home. The staff development plan is a useful topic for a visit alongside those strengths.
