Chopping fruit with safety knives and getting hands into play dough give Chalvey Grove Children's Centre Early Years Service a practical character in its August 2024 nursery day. Small tasks matter here: children kept trying until they achieved what they intended. At its 12 August 2024 inspection, Ofsted rated the provision Good overall.
The setting has capacity for 98 children aged 3 to 60 months, at Montem Academy, Chalvey Grove, Slough. Those whole-setting places should not be read as the size of an individual group.
In August 2024, learning involved physical activity, conversation and opportunities to do things independently. The early years foundation stage is the framework for children's learning, development and care; here, the day's examples included manipulating dough, learning words and practising everyday skills. Squeezing and working dough exercised children's fingers, preparing them for tasks such as using a pencil or pouring a drink.
Outside, children used push-along cars, dug in sand and made sandcastles. Younger children pushed toy buggies while practising walking. These were concrete opportunities to move and explore. Conversation accompanied the activities: staff spoke at children's height and introduced vocabulary, including the meaning of kneading. Fruit preparation also gave children a task to persevere with, rather than having an adult do everything for them.
At the August 2024 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding arrangements and positive support through relationships with families and external professionals. Staff helped parents obtain professional advice and worked with the schools children were due to attend, supporting continuity as children moved on.
During that month, settling involved learning about children and their families before attendance began. Staff built familiar relationships and gave parents updates on children's achievements, with key staff helping families extend learning at home. The qualification to this positive picture concerned behaviour: adults did not consistently explain why a child's actions were unacceptable, so children sometimes repeated them.
The address is Montem Academy, Chalvey Grove, Slough, SL1 2TE. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, across the year, with closures for bank holidays and one week at Christmas. That Christmas closure needs a place in a working family's childcare calendar.
In August 2024, the setting received funding for free early education for children aged two, three and four. This is a dated funding position, rather than a promise of entitlement for an individual child.
Chalvey Grove merits consideration for families who value practical play, outdoor movement and communication between home and nursery. Its August 2024 day combined independence with familiar staff relationships, while the behaviour improvement point deserves attention. The weekday opening window and year-round calendar will matter to working parents; the strongest educational examples are children doing, talking and trying again.
Ofsted rated the setting Good overall on 12 August 2024. The improvement point concerned consistency in explaining why unwanted behaviour was unacceptable.
