Porridge oats and hand-picked herbs gave outdoor play a memorable flavour at Creech St Michael Community Pre-School in September 2022. Children mixed ingredients together and shared water between them, combining exploration with cooperation. That practical, hands-on play is the clearest picture of its character.
At its September 2022 inspection, Ofsted judged the provision Good and safeguarding effective, while identifying improvements needed in behaviour strategies, age-appropriate teaching and staff communication. The pre-school has 24 places in total; children attending at that visit were aged two to four.
The early years foundation stage sets requirements for children's learning, development and care: here, the September 2022 curriculum translated that into activities covering different areas of development, with opportunities to repeat tasks and practise skills. Planning followed children's changing interests rather than keeping activities fixed.
In September 2022, children could reach resources indoors and outside themselves. Seashells prompted ideas during individual and shared play, while frequent stories encouraged children to handle books, turn pages and explore flaps. These were tangible ways to combine independent exploration with adult involvement.
The rhythm of the day needed attention. In September 2022, adult direction frequently interrupted play, and inconsistent use of a sand timer made changes between activities harder to understand. Children remained willing to try, but clearer expectations would have made those transitions easier.
In September 2022, children readily sought help from staff, who demonstrated tasks and talked about emotions such as pride after an achievement. Newsletters told parents about children's learning. Staff also recognised when extra help was needed and involved external agencies; toys gathered in a bucket helped draw children's attention to a shared activity.
Waiting was a weaker part of care at that visit. In September 2022, handwashing and mealtime routines sometimes left children waiting long enough to lose concentration, with climbing on chairs and running indoors among the consequences. Better organisation mattered as much as the activities themselves.
The address is Creech St Michael Church of England Primary School, Creech St Michael, Taunton, TA3 5QQ. In September 2022, the pre-school operated within the primary school's grounds, opening Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.30pm, during term time. It then received early-education funding for children aged two, three and four.
In September 2022, children visited the adjoining primary school and used its hall, giving those later attending it familiarity with the surroundings. Attending the pre-school does not guarantee a Reception place; families still apply through the local authority admissions process.
For families drawn to outdoor exploration and familiarity with adjoining primary-school surroundings, the September 2022 picture offers concrete reasons for interest. It also gives clear points to examine: smoother routines, consistent behaviour expectations and staff training. Those practical details should carry weight alongside the Good judgement.
