A castle held together with tape, flowers turned into vocabulary lessons and a quieter sensory room give Sunshine Nursery its character in the January 2023 account of daily life. This Boldon Colliery setting has 24 places in total. Its appeal rests on practical play and attention to children's feelings.

In January 2023, learning followed the early years foundation stage, the framework for children's learning, development and care: counting, conversation and physical activity were woven into play. Children counted while preparing fruit, drew on the floor and painted on a fence. Older children worked out how to keep their castle together, while younger children practised listening through stories.
Outdoor play supplied further material for conversation. Children discussed possible destinations for aeroplanes overhead and examined flowers, learning words for their parts. These were everyday opportunities to connect language with something children could see.
At the January 2023 inspection, Ofsted found safeguarding effective and praised the support delivered with parents and other professionals for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities, whose progress was strong.
In January 2023, the sensory room offered a quieter space for children overwhelmed by noise or activity. The Colour Monster story helped children name and discuss emotions; the snuffle station turned nose-cleaning, tissue disposal and handwashing into a practical hygiene routine.
Staff also adapted play to family changes, using doll-care activities for children with new siblings. Preparation for school included managing clothing and taking care of belongings, giving independence a concrete purpose. Parents were encouraged to send healthy packed lunches, and mealtimes included discussion of nutrition.
