The Old Station Nursery Bridgetown

At a Glance

Gingerbread storytelling, soup-making and preparations for primary school give Bridgetown its character. This preschool setting shares the Bridgetown Primary School site on Byron Road in Stratford-upon-Avon, making the move towards school a tangible part of its story rather than an abstract milestone.

At its February 2023 inspection, Ofsted rated the nursery Good overall. Its capacity is 36 children, with an accepted age range of 33 to 60 months. That is a whole-setting figure, rather than the size of a room or a group attending together.

The most useful distinction for families is between practical preparation for school and a school admission advantage. In February 2023, school teachers visited nursery children; in June 2025, preschool children personalised school bags in preparation for their next step. Attending the nursery does not guarantee a Reception place.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the requirements for children's learning, development and care: in everyday terms, play, conversation and practical experiences help children develop skills alongside their daily care. Bridgetown's activities give concrete examples of how those elements can connect.

In November 2024, Gingerbread Man Week grew from children's interest in The Gingerbread Man. Children acted out the story on a stage, made felt-paper gingerbread figures and explored scented playdough with cutters. The story became something to perform, make and discuss. Counting shapes and deciding where to place buttons brought early maths into the creative work.

The cookery club also connected the tale with practical learning: preschool and after-school children baked gingerbread biscuits, measured ingredients and followed a recipe. Another November 2024 activity involved preschool children preparing butternut squash soup, including peeling, cutting and measuring. After-school children ate the finished soup. These are dated examples of children taking part in a purposeful task with a result others could enjoy, rather than a promise of a fixed weekly programme.

In February 2023, the play environment included a dressing-up and role-play area equipped for mark-making. Children turned their imagined workplaces into opportunities to write notes and letters. During story sessions, staff left room for children to predict what might happen and talk about favourite characters. Language practice was woven into play as well as books.

Outdoor and Community Life

In February 2023, children selected their own resources and put on coats and wellingtons for outdoor play. They also washed their hands, cleared away and served their meals. Those everyday tasks gave them opportunities to practise doing things for themselves, alongside active time outdoors.

Care and Support

At the February 2023 inspection, Ofsted judged safeguarding effective but identified a need for staff to understand targeted SEND interventions better, because learning did not consistently reflect children's play preferences or give staff clear strategies for their next steps. That combination matters: the positive safeguarding judgement should sit alongside the specific educational support concern.

Communication with families was another February 2023 improvement point. Pictures and information were shared, but some parents were uncertain about settling, learning plans and preparation for school. Updates need to explain the purpose of a child's activities, as well as show what happened during the day.

School preparation has included personal touches. In June 2025, children in the leaving cohort and younger children moving on the following year received school bags, personalising them with a photograph in the name-holder slot. This gave children something concrete to connect with the coming change.

In February 2023, nursery staff invited school teachers to visit and met Reception teachers to discuss preparation. Teacher visits and meetings with Reception teachers connected nursery preparation with the next stage of learning.

Practical Information

Sessions and Attendance

The address is Bridgetown Primary School, Byron Road, Stratford-upon-Avon, CV37 7JP. Opening hours are 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, during term time; closures include school holidays, bank holidays and Christmas. Families whose work continues through school holidays need to weigh that calendar carefully.

In February 2023, preschool sessions ran from 9am to 3pm, while club sessions ran from 8.45am to 9am and 3.10pm to 6pm. Those were the arrangements at that date and should be read separately from the current opening window.

The nursery's place on the school site makes the Reception distinction especially important. Nursery attendance does not guarantee admission to Bridgetown Primary School; families still use the local authority admissions process.

Things to Consider

  • Support tailored to your child. February 2023 brought a specific concern about staff's understanding of targeted SEND strategies. At a visit, ask how those strategies now connect with a child's interests and next learning steps.
  • Meaningful parent updates. Some parents in February 2023 were unclear about settling and learning plans. Ask to see how current updates explain both, rather than relying on photographs alone.
  • The term-time calendar. School holidays, bank holidays and Christmas are closure periods. Consider whether that calendar fits the care your household needs throughout the year.
  • Your complete childcare bill. For this term-time setting, what funded attendance pattern can your child use, and how are meals, non-food consumables and additional hours treated in the written quotation?

The Verdict

Bridgetown suits families seeking term-time preschool care on a primary-school site, with practical school preparation and hands-on learning illustrated by cooking and storytelling. Its Good judgement dates to February 2023. The decision deserves equal attention to the strengths of those activities and the specific questions about SEND strategies and parent communication. The school connection is useful preparation, while Reception admission remains a separate application.
