Busy Bees Sunderland, Doxford

At a Glance

Maps, pretend passports and conversations about volcanoes give Busy Bees Sunderland, Doxford a more recognisable character than a curriculum slogan could. In May 2022, children used an imaginary travel agency to explore destinations and practise early writing, while younger children experimented with sounds and textures. These were everyday opportunities to talk, investigate and make choices.

Ofsted rated the nursery Good on 30 May 2022. The setting is on Glanville Road in Doxford Business Park, Sunderland, SR3 3UY, and has 90 places in total for children aged 2 to 60 months. That whole-setting capacity is separate from the number of children sharing any individual room.

Full-time attendance, mornings and afternoons are offered. The practical appeal is the choice between longer attendance and sessions covering part of the day; the educational questions centre on how staff extend play and share each child's learning needs.

The Nursery Experience

Learning and Activities

The early years foundation stage sets the framework for children's learning, development and care: play, conversation and physical exploration are part of education alongside everyday care. It is the foundation for the nursery day, rather than an additional programme.

In May 2022, older children developed their imaginary travel agency with maps, passports and paper for recording information. The activity connected conversation with early writing, giving marks on paper a purpose within a game. Younger children explored sensory materials and made noises with spoons and metal buckets. Their learning started with testing what objects could do.

Language also ran through ordinary exchanges that May. Staff introduced words describing texture and appearance to younger children, while older children discussed volcanic eruptions. In the pre-school room, the emphasis included becoming confident speakers and extending vocabulary. For families, these examples show the value of adults joining children's interests and adding useful words.

Mathematics needed more consistent attention. In May 2022, scales in the construction area, displayed numerals and height charts gave children encounters with number and measurement, but staff sometimes missed chances to introduce counting or mathematical vocabulary during play. Equipment alone did not make the most of those opportunities.

Outdoor and Everyday Play

During May 2022, children could choose between indoor and outdoor activities, including water, sand and painting. Resources were accessible enough for children to select their own play, supporting practice in making decisions independently.

Babies also used climbing apparatus with steps and a slide that May, taking turns while staff encouraged safe choices. Older children listened to one another's stories and waited for others to finish lunch before leaving the table. Physical exploration and learning to share space both featured in the day.

Care and Support

At the May 2022 inspection, Ofsted found effective safeguarding arrangements and positive support for children with SEND, including work with Portage and speech and language therapists. These partnerships brought outside expertise into support for individual children.

In May 2022, each child had a key person, with a buddy arrangement providing cover when that practitioner was absent. Familiarity with care needs was a strength of the arrangement, but covering staff did not consistently familiarise themselves with children's learning information. The distinction matters: knowing a child's routines and knowing what to help them learn next are connected responsibilities.

For children learning English alongside another language, staff worked with parents that May to identify useful words from home. Words relating to sleep and toileting helped connect family routines with nursery care, and displays included English alongside children's home languages. This was a practical mechanism for keeping communication connected across both settings.

Parents used a nursery app in May 2022 to exchange information and obtain activity ideas for home. Communication therefore extended beyond updates about the day to sharing ways of continuing children's interests. These examples describe practice at that date.

Things to Consider

  • Learning through play. In May 2022, adults missed some opportunities to extend counting and mathematical language. On a visit, ask how staff now develop these skills within activities children choose.
  • Key-person cover. The May 2022 buddy arrangement supported care continuity, but learning information was not consistently used by covering staff. Ask how handovers now communicate each child's next learning steps.
  • Attendance and funded costs. Morning, afternoon and full-time patterns offer different ways to organise childcare. Before joining, request a written explanation of how funding fits your chosen pattern, including its delivery across the year and the arrangements for meals and consumables.

The Verdict

Busy Bees Sunderland, Doxford suits families seeking morning or afternoon attendance as well as full-time childcare. Its May 2022 examples of imaginative play, sensory exploration and communication give useful substance to the Good judgement. The decision turns on current practice: extending mathematics during play and making learning handovers as dependable as care handovers are the two most valuable questions to pursue.
