Children cheering each other on during sport capture the character of Chafford Hundred Preschool Playgroup: kindness has a practical place in the day. At its June 2025 inspection, Ofsted rated the setting Good overall, with Outstanding judgements for behaviour and attitudes and leadership and management, and found safeguarding effective.
The playgroup has 50 places in total and is based on Clifford Road in Chafford Hundred, Grays. Children attending in June 2025 were aged two to four. Its strongest appeal is the combination of shared activities, opportunities to make choices and attention to children's confidence.
In June 2025, learning mixed adult-organised activities with play directed by children. Circle time and songs involving numbers sat alongside opportunities to choose and express preferences. Objects, props and singing gave children several ways to engage with an activity rather than relying on spoken instructions alone.
The early years foundation stage sets requirements for children's learning, development and care; here, the June 2025 day put these into practice through play, conversation and shared activities. The attention bin supported listening, taking turns and vocabulary, with staff introducing words and inviting children into discussions. Speaking had a purpose.
Outings that June included a city farm, food banks, care homes and the forest. In the garden, children grew plants and offered sugar water to bees. These experiences connected learning with living things and community life, although staff sometimes missed opportunities to deepen children's understanding of nature or build from their existing knowledge.
At the June 2025 inspection, Ofsted found effective support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities and children learning English as an additional language, with individual assistance and adaptations helping them participate and progress.
In June 2025, visual prompts and individual help during group activities supported participation, while a quiet space called the pod gave children somewhere less busy. Staff adapted interactions to children's emotional and sensory needs. Wooden bridges and trampolines bought using additional funding supported movement and emotional regulation.
Everyday independence also mattered that June: children managed hygiene routines and accessed drinking water, with staff reminding them about hydration and suitable clothing in hot weather. Staff joined transition meetings with receiving schools and helped parents explain their children's needs. Leaders followed up training and supported staff development, giving professional learning a practical place in the setting's work.

Morning sessions operated from 9.15am to 12.15pm, with afternoon sessions from 1.15pm to 4.15pm; an optional lunch club occupied the interval from 12.15pm to 1.15pm. These were separate session choices rather than simply an opening window.
The playgroup provided funded early education for eligible children in June 2025. Eligibility was a condition of that offer.
