In February 2026, a tambourine signal, children pouring their own drinks and number problems built into block play illustrated purposeful everyday routines at The Little People, Bowfell Road. Based in Urmston, it caters for children aged two to five.
At the February 2026 inspection, Ofsted judged all six evaluated areas Strong standard, confirmed that safeguarding standards were met and found rapid progress in children's learning, including their spoken language. The detail matters more than a headline: children were learning to explain themselves, take responsibility for everyday tasks and join in with others.
In February 2026, learning followed children's interests and experiences in their community. The early years foundation stage provides the framework for children's learning, development and care; here, its areas of learning were brought into play through conversation, counting, music and movement.
Younger children explored numbers through stories and rhymes, while older children worked through changes in quantity using blocks. Circle times were organised around children's development. Taking turns to choose instruments gave younger children a practical reason to listen and wait; hopscotch introduced challenges for balance and coordination.
Visits to places of worship extended children's understanding of beliefs and traditions. Within the setting, a tambourine announced an approaching change of activity, giving children time to finish playing. These examples show how learning and routines worked together, rather than competing for children's attention.
At the February 2026 inspection, Ofsted found that support for children with special educational needs and/or disabilities was effective, with needs identified early, external professionals involved where needed and plans reviewed with families.
In February 2026, communication boards and visual choices helped children understand routines and express preferences. Sensory resources were kept alongside evacuation equipment, extending individual support to unexpected disruptions. Additional community space was also used to accommodate sensory needs.
A key person provided continuity during settling, and familiar comfort items could stay with children temporarily. Daily toothbrushing included the happy hippo demonstration, which showed children how to brush effectively; the healthy lunch box challenge encouraged balanced food choices and involved families. Older children collected their own lunch boxes, making lunchtime another opportunity to practise independence.
The address is 2nd Davyhulme Scout Hut, Bowfell Road, Urmston, Manchester, M41 5RN. Opening hours are 8am to 5pm, Monday to Friday. The nursery operates across the year, closing on bank holidays and for two weeks at Christmas.
